Background: Dental caries is a prevalent oral health issue, primarily resulting from demineralization of the enamel. Remineralizing agents such as sodium fluoride (NaF) have been widely used to counteract this process. Recent studies suggest that natural extracts, such as grape seed extract (GSE), may also have significant remineralizing properties. This study aims to compare the efficacy of GSE and NaF on surface and subsurface enamel lesions in an setting.

Materials And Methods: In this study, 60 extracted human premolars were randomly divided into three groups of 20 each: control (no treatment), NaF treatment, and GSE treatment. Artificial enamel lesions were created on the buccal surfaces of all samples. The NaF group was treated with a 5% sodium fluoride solution, while the GSE group received a 6.5% grape seed extract solution. Treatments were applied daily for 10 days. Surface microhardness (SMH) and cross-sectional microhardness (CSMH) were measured before and after treatment to assess remineralization.

Results: The NaF group showed a significant increase in SMH (45%) and CSMH (35%) compared to the control group. The GSE group demonstrated a similar trend with a 40% increase in SMH and a 30% increase in CSMH. Both treatments were significantly more effective than the control ( < 0.05), with no significant difference between the NaF and GSE groups ( > 0.05).

Conclusion: Grape seed extract exhibits comparable remineralizing efficacy to sodium fluoride on both surface and subsurface enamel lesions . These findings suggest that GSE could be a viable natural alternative to fluoride for the prevention and treatment of dental caries.

The antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of lignin are often emphasized; however, not every type exhibits these properties. In this work, water-soluble fractions of alkali lignin (AL), poly-(caffeyl alcohol) lignin (PCFA), pyrolytic lignin (PL) and grape seed lignin (GSL) were prepared. The original and water-soluble lignin fractions were comprehensively characterized using high-resolution 2D NMR spectroscopy.

Transmission of Grabloviruses by Insect Vectors.

Among the three viruses of the genus Grablovirus in the plant virus family Geminiviridae, insect vector transmission is documented only for grapevine red blotch virus (GRBV), for which Spissistilus festinus (Hemiptera: Membracidae), the three-cornered alfalfa hopper, is identified as a vector. Transmission of GRBV by S. festinus is circulative, nonpropagative; it is also transstadial but neither transovarial, nor via seeds.

The generation of nonbiodegradable waste from food packaging is increasing. Due to the economic unfeasibility of waste segregation and recycling, this material ends up in landfills. To mitigate the environmental impact and explore alternative biodegradable materials, the present study seeks to develop foams based on cassava starch by incorporating agro-industrial residues from whole grape juice and organic grape seed oil for applications in food packaging.

Aflatoxin B (AFB ), a potent mycotoxin, is known to be an immunotoxic agent that causes various immune system disorders. It can cause immunosuppression by direct toxic effect on the host or by its ability to interfere with the immune response and thereby lead to secondary infections. The immunomodulatory effects of AFB and its metabolites have been reported in many studies.

Parkinson's disease is a complex neurodegenerative disorder characterized by neuroinflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and the accumulation of misfolded proteins such as α-synuclein. This review explores the therapeutic potential of tannins, particularly proanthocyanidins and hydrolyzable tannins from grape seeds, in alleviating Parkinson's disease pathology. Condensed tannins exhibit significant antioxidant properties, can cross the blood-brain barrier, reduce oxidative stress, upregulate antioxidant proteins, and prevent neuronal apoptosis.
