Over the past decades, the understanding of sleep has evolved to be a fundamental physiological mechanism integral to the processing of different types of memory rather than just being a passive brain state. The cyclic sleep substates, namely, rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and non-REM (NREM) sleep, exhibit distinct yet complementary oscillatory patterns that form inter-regional networks between different brain regions crucial to learning, memory consolidation, and memory retrieval. Technical advancements in imaging and manipulation approaches have provided deeper understanding of memory formation processes on multi-scales including brain-wide, synaptic, and molecular levels.

Individuals with comorbid rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behaviour disorder (RBD) and neurotrauma (NT; defined by traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder) have an earlier age of RBD symptom onset, increased RBD-related symptom severity and more neurological features indicative of prodromal synucleinopathy compared to RBD only. An early sign of neurodegenerative condition is autonomic dysfunction, which we sought to evaluate by examining heart rate variability during sleep. Participants with overnight polysomnography were recruited from the Veterans Affairs Portland Health Care System.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) and Insomnia disorder (ID) are characterized by sleep alterations. To define their polysomnographic profiles, we conducted a Network Meta-Analysis comparing MDD and ID patients versus healthy controls (HCs). The literature search, conducted from 2008 up to January 2023 and following PRISMA guidelines, covered PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Embase databases.

Autonomic nervous system (ANS) has been suggested often associated with the isolated rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (iRBD), with iRBD, and heart rate variability (HRV) is a commonly used tool to assess it. However, the accuracy of HRV is heavily influenced by respiratory rate (RespR), potentially causing misinterpretation of frequency domain HRV indices. This study compares sleep-related ANS function between iRBD patients and a control group (CG) using respiratory-adjusted HRV spectral analysis.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) exerts pathogenic effects through a combination of sleep fragmentation (SF) and intermittent hypoxia (IH). The mechanisms through which sleep disruption impacts memory might arise by investigating disruption of specific sleep stages and, when such disruption occurs through OSA, by evaluating the individual contributions of SF and IH. Given region-specific EEG slow activity during non-REM sleep has been associated with overnight declarative, motor and spatial memory formation, we investigated the effects of disrupting slow wave sleep (SWS) on a virtual maze navigation task.
