Epsomite and Epsom salt are very common mineral phases, and many known uses are found in agriculture, and in food and pharmaceutical industries. Natural epsomite can be fibrous and inhalable, potentially reaching the digestive tract after dissolving in mucus and saliva. Epsom salt is a common food additive (E 518) to which humans can be exposed daily, although its health effects are still debated. This study aims to (i) determine if natural epsomite (MP) and Epsom salt (SE) may be toxic to humans and (ii) identify and quantify the impurities in natural epsomite and try to ascertain their role in the toxicity of this mineral. In vitro experiments were performed on human colon epithelial cancer cells (Caco-2), enterocyte-like Caco-2-derived monolayers, human monocytic cell line THP-1, and THP-1-derived M0 macrophages. Generally, MP showed significantly higher toxicity in terms of oxidative stress, DNA damage and inflammation than SE, whose effects can be considered negligible. The higher pathogenicity of MP undoubtedly comes from the toxic elements of impurities, which are absent in pure SE. This research clarifies the role of impurities in the toxicity of natural epsomite, which may be higher than previously supposed. Moreover, considering its extensive use in the food industry, it represents a new step in assessing the safety of ingesting magnesium sulphate.

Overproduction of pathogenic cell-free DNA (cfDNA) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) plays crucial roles in the onset and perpetuation of ulcerative colitis (UC). Inspired by sweeping robots, a magnesium@polylactic acid-glycolic acid copolymer@polyethylenimine (Mg@PLGA@PEI) microswimmer capable of cleaning off deleterious disease triggers along its path of progress is designed. Mg@PLGA@PEI is successfully synthesized by adopting a core-shell structure with a small opening which allows for Mg-water reaction.

Refractory status asthmaticus is an extreme form of asthma exacerbation characterized by hypoxemia, hypercarbia, and secondary respiratory failure and is considered a medical emergency. Mechanical ventilation and maximal medical therapy are often required for treatment, but they frequently fail to provide a resolution. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), however, has increasingly been used as an unconventional treatment modality if all others fail.

While antenatal recommendations regarding preterm birth are essential to preventing neonatal morbidity and mortality, implementation of these recommendations underscore how health system capacity and systemic factors, such as access and quality, greatly influence their utilization. To date, there is limited synthesis focused on the implementation of antenatal preterm birth interventions. Our objectives were to focus on implementation science studies intended to 1) increase referral mechanisms of pregnant people to higher levels of care where the management of preterm labor or delivery is possible and 2) map the implementation of preterm birth interventions, including the administration of antenatal corticosteroids, magnesium sulfate, and antibiotics.

Background: Preclinical studies have found marked diurnal/circadian variation in the effect of neuroprotective agents in acute ischemic stroke. However, the presence of diurnal variation in treatment outcomes after neuroprotective therapy has not been analyzed in human clinical trials and variation after thrombolytic therapy has been under-studied.
Methods: We analyzed patients with acute cerebral ischemia enrolled in the Field Administration of Stroke Therapy - Magnesium (FAST-MAG) randomized trial of magnesium sulfate started in the ambulance within two hours of stroke onset (last known well time).

Background: del Nido cardioplegia (dNC) solution is widely used in pediatric and congenital cardiac surgery. In 2014, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC) changed from Mee cardioplegic solution to dNC. Since Mee solution does not contain magnesium, magnesium was administrated post cross-clamp removal, at a dose of 25 mg/kg up to 1 g, to abate hypomagnesemia.
