Attributable Costs of Infections in Korea.

J Korean Med Sci

Division of Infectious Disease, Department of Internal Medicine, Hanyang University College of Medicine, Seoul, Korea.

Published: February 2025

Background: infection (CDI) is one of the most common hospital-acquired infections, with its incidence and disease burden increasing markedly worldwide over the past decade.

Methods: To assess the attributable costs of CDI in Korea, the expenses related to hospital management of CDI cases were computed. This analysis used data from the National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort spanning a decade (2010-2019). The annual national burden of CDI was determined by combining the attributable cost per CDI case with the number of patients with CDI obtained from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service data.

Results: The attributable costs of CDI were determined based on variations in the length of hospital stay and medical costs between patients with CDI and control patients. The mean length of hospital stay was significantly longer for patients with CDI than that for control patients: 43.06 vs. 14.76 days (a difference of 28.30 days, < 0.001). The adjusted medical costs (2019 = 100) for cases of CDI and controls were 11,162 USD and 3,318 USD, respectively, with a significant difference of 7,843 USD ( < 0.001). The cost of CDI per case exhibited a noticeable annual increase from 2010 to 2019, despite an annual decreasing trend in length of hospital stay. The estimated national cost attributed to CDI was $28.9 million in 2010; however, it increased gradually each year, reaching $205.6 million in 2019 (a 600% increase over 10 years).

Conclusion: CDI is associated with substantial healthcare costs in Korea. The economic burden of CDI has gradually increased in South Korea.

Osteosarcoma (OS) is one of the most prevalent bone malignancies with a poor prognosis. Various types of programmed cell death patterns can influence cancer progression and response to treatment. We aimed to integrate different molecular characteristics of cell death for risk stratification and personalized therapy.

Background: An excessive posterior tibial slope (PTS) is a risk factor for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture or rerupture, and it can be managed by an anterior closing wedge high tibial osteotomy (ACW-HTO). The effect of slope-changing osteotomies on patellar height is poorly described after infratuberosity ACW-HTO.

Purpose: To assess the effect of ACW-HTO on patellar height using an infratuberosity approach.

Clostridioides difficile infections are difficult and serious problem occurring in patients staying in intensive care units. In recent years, the number and severity of these infections, as well as the mortality rate, have been increasing, posing a serious epidemiological problem. This is caused, among other factors, by stressors, artificial nutrition, and sepsis, which lead to disturbances in the patients' microbiome.

Background: Half of the patients who undergo successful recanalization after endovascular treatment (EVT) experience poor clinical outcomes. Impaired microvascular reperfusion (IMR) may explain this lack of improvement, but its frequency and clinical significance remain unclear. The study aims to describe the frequency and associated factors of IMR.

The pervasive presence of microplastics (MPs) in aquatic environments, coupled with their potential to act as vectors for toxic contaminants, raises significant concerns for human health. This study quantifies the health risks associated with the ingestion of microplastics and their co-contaminants in aquatic medium, considering both individual and interactive effects. The analysis encompasses four MP types (PP, PS, PET, PE) and prevalent contaminants including heavy metals (Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs, expressed as BaP equivalents), and plastic additives (DEHP, DBP, BPA)-to calculate individual Hazard Quotient (HQ), interaction-based Hazard Index (HI), individual Incremental Lifetime Cancer Risk (ILCR), and interaction-based ILCR (ILCR).
