Published: January 2025

Structural batteries offer a transformative approach to integrate energy storage directly into the frameworks of electric vehicles and aircrafts, enabling multifunctional construction. This study presents a nacre-inspired multilayer composite electrode fabricated via the cold sintering process (CSP), achieving a balance of enhanced electrochemical performance and mechanical robustness. The composite electrode combines active electrode materials with a ductile conducting polymer-carbon-mixture phase in a layered architecture. The resulting electrodes exhibit a material toughness of 0.635 MJ m, approximately 9 times greater than conventional single-layer electrodes, alongside maintained ultimate strength. Full-field strain mapping using digital image correlation (DIC) reveals the underlying strengthening mechanisms. The influence of soft-layer thickness variations on both mechanical and electrochemical properties was also systematically analyzed to achieve optimal performance. Notably, the multilayer composite electrode delivered a reversible specific capacity of 177 mAh g and an areal capacity of 22 mAh cm at a high mass loading of 136 mg cm, significantly outperforming commercial cathodes (e.g., 3 to 4.5 mAh/cm).

Coaxial Direct Ink Writing of Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Elastomers in 3D Architectures.

Adv Mater

January 2025

Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Pennsylvania, 3231 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, PA, 19104, USA.

Cholesteric liquid crystal elastomers (CLCEs) hold great promise for mechanochromic applications in anti-counterfeiting, smart textiles, and soft robotics, thanks to the structural color and elasticity. While CLCEs are printed via direct ink writing (DIW) to fabricate free-standing films, complex 3D structures are not fabricated due to the opposing rheological properties necessary for cholesteric alignment and multilayer stacking. Here, 3D CLCE structures are realized by utilizing coaxial DIW to print a CLC ink within a silicone ink.

The increasing reliance on electronic devices has created a pressing demand for high-performance and sustainable electromagnetic interference shielding materials. While conventional materials, such as metals and carbon-based composites, offer excellent shielding capabilities, they are hindered by high costs, environmental concerns, and limitations in scalability. Polysaccharide-based materials, including cellulose, chitosan, and alginate, represent a promising alternative due to their biodegradability, renewability, and versatility.

Microwave surface and Lamb waves in a multilayered piezoelectric "Al-IDT/(AlSc)N/(001)[110] diamond" structure designed as a SAW resonator were studied using both the experimental and modeling methods. In this structure, it is possible to generate Rayleigh, surface horizontal (SH) and Lamb waves simultaneously. The successful excitation of Lamb waves at operating frequencies up to 20 GHz has been obtained.

The porous structure, in which many pores are intentionally placed inside the material, has excellent impact energy absorption properties. Recent studies have attempted to fabricate multi-layered porous structures with different mechanical properties within a single porous structure sample, and the mechanical properties of these structures are being elucidated. However, these studies mainly attempted to vary the densities, pore structures, and alloy compositions within a single material, such as aluminum, for the entire sample.
