Resonant Emittance Mixing of Flat Beams in Plasma Accelerators.

Published: December 2024

Linear colliders rely on high-quality flat beams to achieve the desired event rate while avoiding potentially deleterious beamstrahlung effects. Here, we show that flat beams in plasma accelerators can be subject to quality degradation due to emittance mixing. This effect occurs when the beam particles' betatron oscillations in a nonlinearly coupled wakefield become resonant in the horizontal and vertical planes. Emittance mixing can lead to a substantial decrease of the luminosity, the main quantity determining the event rate. In some cases, the use of laser drivers or flat particle beam drivers may decrease the fraction of resonant particles and, hence, mitigate emittance deterioration.

Millimeter-scale radioluminescent power for electronic sensors.

iScience

January 2025

Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences, University of California, Berkeley, Berkeley, CA 94720, USA.

The storage and generation of electrical energy at the mm-scale is a core roadblock to realizing many untethered miniature systems, including industrial, environmental, and medically implanted sensors. We describe the potential to address the sensor energy requirement in a two-step process by first converting alpha radiation into light, which can then be translated into electrical power through a photovoltaic harvester circuit protected by a clear sealant. Different phosphorescent and scintillating materials were mixed with the alpha-emitter Th-227, and the conversion efficiency of europium-doped yttrium oxide was the highest at around 2%.

Carbazolylpyridine ()-based tetradentate platinum(II) complexes containing fused 6/5/6 metallocycles.

A series of carbazolylpyridine ()-based 6/5/6 Pt(II) complexes featuring tetradentate ligands with nitrogen or oxygen atoms as bridging groups was designed and synthesized, and the bridging nitrogen atoms were derived from acridinyl (Ac), azaaceridine (AAc) and carbazole (Cz). Systematic experimental and theoretical studies reveal that the ligand structures have a significant effect on the electrochemical, photophysical and excited state properties of these complexes. Their oxidation processes mainly occur on the carbazole-Pt moieties, whereas the reduction processes typically occur on the electron-deficient pyridine (Py) moieties.

Stepwise Modulation of Bridged Single-Benzene-Based Fluorophores for Materials Science.

Chemistry

December 2024

Faculty of Chemistry (Organic Chemistry), CENIDE and Center of Medical Biotechnology (ZMB), University of Duisburg-Essen, Universitätsstraße 7, 45141, Essen, Germany.

In recent years, researchers studying fluorogenic samples have steadily shifted from using large, expensive, poorly soluble fluorophores with complex synthetic sequences to smaller, simpler π scaffolds with low molecular weight. This research article presents an in-depth study of the photophysical properties of five bridged single-benzene-based fluorophores (SBBFs) investigated for their solution and solid-state emission (SSSE) properties. The compounds O, NO, NO, NO, and N are derived from a central terephthalonitrile core and vary in the amount of oxygen and nitrogen bridging atoms.

The full information about the interaction between a quantum emitter and an arbitrary electromagnetic environment is encoded in the so-called spectral density. We present an approach for describing such interaction in any coupling regime, providing a Lindblad-like master equation for the emitter dynamics when coupled to a general nanophotonic structure. Our framework is based on the splitting of the spectral density into two terms.
