This data article describes the operation of gas and oil fuelled residential heating systems in Ireland. Based on almost 10,000 homes, the data presents information on the operation of domestic heating systems (whether turned on/off by the user), and the firing of the boiler during 2-hour slots across a period of two years ending in September 2021 by geographical region. The electrification of heating is government policy, with the ambition that hundreds of thousands of homes will switch from oil and gas fuelled residential heating to heat pumps. Such an outcome will have implications for electricity generation, transmission and distribution, especially during peak demand periods. This dataset can be used as a starting point to examine how additional residential heating loads will impact on the electricity grid and provide insight on where electricity grid strengthening works should be prioritised.

This study provides comprehensive overview of the current level, sources and human exposure risk to hazardous polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in South American outdoor air. Research documents were obtainable for only 6 countries within the target period (2014 - 2024). For all contaminants, urban concentrations exceeded that of rural/remote locations.

In the efforts to decarbonise the heat sector, heat pumps can offer a cost-effective transition away from fossil fuels. Water Source Heat Pumps (WSHP) can be utilised in cases where ambient water sources (river, ground water, abandoned mines water) are present. However, the economic benefits of different levels of heat pump centralisation as well as their comparative advantages over other decentralised options such as individual Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP) or Gas Boilers (GB) remain uncertain and further investigations are necessary to fully assess their potential.

Residential water heating represents an important nexus of energy/water conservation, waterborne disease, hygiene, and consumer preference. Here, we examine attributes of two off-the-shelf 151-L tank water heaters, one with hot water recirculation (recirculating) and another without recirculation (standard), compared to a tankless on-demand heater (on-demand). Energy efficiency decreased in the order on-demand > standard > continuous recirculation.
