In patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI), thrombolytic therapy and revascularization strategies allow complete recanalization of occluded epicardial coronary arteries. However, approximately 35% of patients still experience myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury, which contributing to increased AMI mortality. Therefore, an accurate understanding of myocardial I/R injury is important for preventing and treating AMI. The death of each cell (cardiomyocytes, endothelial cells, vascular smooth muscle cells, cardiac fibroblasts, and mesenchymal stem cells) after myocardial ischemia/reperfusion is associated with apoptosis due to mitochondrial dysfunction. Abnormal opening of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore, aberrant mitochondrial membrane potential, Ca overload, mitochondrial fission, and mitophagy can lead to mitochondrial dysfunction, thereby inducing mitochondrial apoptosis. The manifestation of mitochondrial apoptosis varies according to cell type. Here, we reviewed the characteristics of mitochondrial apoptosis in cardiomyocytes, endothelial cells, vascular smooth muscle cells, cardiac fibroblasts, and mesenchymal stem cells following myocardial ischemia/reperfusion.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most prevalent form of primary liver cancer, notoriously refractory to conventional chemotherapy. Historically, sulfane sulfur-based compounds have been explored for the treatment of HCC, but their efficacy has been underwhelming. We recently reported a novel sulfane sulfur donor, PSCP, which exhibited improved chemical stability and structural malleability.

Ferroptosis is a form of iron-dependent programmed cell death, which is distinct from apoptosis, necrosis, and autophagy. Mitochondria play a critical role in initiating and amplifying ferroptosis in cancer cells. Voltage-Dependent Anion Channel 1 (VDAC1) embedded in the mitochondrial outer membrane, exerts roles in regulation of ferroptosis.

Molecular regulation of mitophagy signaling in tumor microenvironment and its targeting for cancer therapy.

Cytokine Growth Factor Rev

Aberrations emerging in mitochondrial homeostasis are restrained by mitophagy to control mitochondrial integrity, bioenergetics signaling, metabolism, oxidative stress, and apoptosis. The mitophagy-accompanied mitochondrial processes that occur in a dysregulated condition act as drivers for cancer occurrence. In addition, the enigmatic nature of mitophagy in cancer cells modulates the cellular proteome, creating challenges for therapeutic interventions.

The aim of the present study was to obtain new metal complexes of citrus pectin with cobalt ions based on potassium polygalacturonate and to prepare a new pharmacological composition (PC) PGKCo: PGNaCo (1:1) with antitumor activity based on potassium cobalt polygalacturonate (PGKCo) and sodium cobalt polygalacturonate (PGNaCo). The study of the effect of PGKCo, PGNaCo and PC on the cell viability of tumor cell lines of different genesis in vitro showed that the obtained compounds are soluble in water and exhibit selective cytotoxic activity against the tumor cell lines of human lung carcinoma A549, breast adenocarcinoma MCF-7 and cervical carcinoma M-HeLa, with no significant toxic effect on normal human cells. The possible mechanism of action of the investigated PC on M-HeLa cancer cells was investigated.
