This study investigates the associations between early childhood adversities, stress perception, and fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS). Although the interconnection between dysregulated stress systems and FMS is well documented, the interconnection between early adversities and FMS remains less understood. This study explores the relationship of early-life stress and FMS by examining its mediation through perceived stress, and acute and chronic endocrine stress indicators. Stress was assessed using the perceived stress scale, as well as using salivary and hair cortisol as endocrine indicators of acute and chronic stress, respectively. The sample consisted of 99 individuals with FMS and 50 pain-free controls. A structural equation model was used to assess the mediating effects of stress indicators between early adversities and the severity of FMS. Compared with controls, individuals with FMS had notably higher early adversity scores (d = 0.63) and greater occurrence of exposure to adversity (78.8% vs 66%). Structural equation modeling indicated that the influence of early adversities on FMS symptoms is mediated by perceived stress levels, with no direct effect observed. Our findings indicate that early-life adversity is a significant determinant of the development of FMS, with the relationship between these factors mediated by perceived stress rather than by endocrine stress indicators. These results underscore the critical role of stress perception in the development and management of FMS, suggesting that perceived stress may serve as a valuable therapeutic target. Incorporating trauma-informed and stress-targeted care into treatment strategies could significantly improve outcomes for individuals with FMS, emphasizing the importance of addressing psychological factors alongside physical symptoms.

Women's Hospital of Nanjing Medical University, Nanjing Women and Children's Healthcare Hospital, Nanjing Women and Children's Healthcare Institute, Nanjing, Jiangsu, China.

To assess whether infertile women's psychological conditions, such as depression, anxiety, and stress, are associated with in vitro fertilization (IVF) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) outcomes, we systematically searched for relevant articles from January 1, 2004, to March 29, 2024, in five databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and PsycINFO. A random-effects model was used to examine pooled standardized mean differences (SMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI). A total of 29 articles fulfilled the inclusion criteria and were included in this meta-analysis.

Referrals to Peer Support for Families in Pediatric Subspecialty Practices: A Qualitative Study.

Matern Child Health J

January 2025

Lucile Packard Foundation for Children's Health, 400 Hamilton Avenue, Suite 340, Palo Alto, CA, 94301, USA.

Introduction: Referrals to peer support (PS) can help families of children with special health care needs in providing emotional support, reducing feelings of stress and anxiety, and improving the care experience. This study aimed to gain providers' perspectives about PS referrals for families of children with special health care needs, including their perspectives on logistics of, barriers to, and facilitators of making referrals as well as the perceived impacts of PS referrals.

Methods: This study builds on a 2022 survey of California pediatric subspecialists about the value and challenges of PS.

Objective:  Pregnant women face heightened vulnerability to mental health disorders (MHDs). There remains a lack of data during the antenatal period, particularly for high-risk subpopulations such as those with fetal anomalies. Understanding the psychological impact of women receiving a fetal anomaly diagnosis is crucial, as it can lead to MHDs.

Abiotic stresses adversely impact plants survival and growth, which in turn affect plants especially crop yields worldwide. To cope with these stresses, plant responses depend on the activation of molecular networks cascades, including stress perception, signal transduction, and the expression of specific stress-related genes. Plant bZIP (basic leucine zipper) transcription factors are important regulators that respond to diverse abiotic stresses.
