Plastics are widely produced due to their stability and ease of manufacturing, but many of them quickly become a waste, breaking down into microplastics and nanoplastics. While methods for the identification and characterization of plastic particles are well consolidated, the small size of nanoplastics presents challenges for their detection and analysis. Furthermore, due to the difficulty of identifying nanoplastics, analytical studies concerning their effect on cells and a comprehensive spectroscopic characterization are still lacking. In this paper, we overcome this obstacle by synthesizing and characterizing, for the first time, PET nanoparticles with specific, stable dimensions through a top-down approach. Using hexafluoroisopropanol-chloroform as a solvent, we prepared PET solutions at various concentrations and analyzed their spectral properties over time. Our results show that PET aggregates into nanoparticles, the quantity of which increases with concentration. These findings provide crucial insights for the detection of nanoplastics in environmental samples through fluorescence measurements and can potentially be used to produce stable PET nanoparticles to evaluate their cytotoxicity.

Rationale And Objective: Conventional positron emission tomography (PET) respiratory gating utilizes a fraction of acquired PET counts (i.e., optimal gate [OG]), whereas elastic motion correction with deblurring (EMCD) utilizes all PET counts to reconstruct motion-corrected images without increasing image noise.

When performing effect studies to investigate the impact of microplastic (MP) on cell lines, algae, or daphnia, it is advantageous if such experiments can be performed without the use of surfactants. The need for surfactants arises from the fact that finely milled pristine MP particles generally are hydrophobic. Methods for the preparation of larger amounts of hydrophilic and hence artificially aged MP particles and approaches for their characterization are of high importance.

Surface modification of various polymer foils was achieved by UV activation and chemical grafting with cysteamine to improve surface properties and antimicrobial efficacy. UVC activation at 254 nm led to changes in surface wettability and charge density, which allowed the introduction of amino and thiol functional groups by cysteamine grafting. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed increased nitrogen and sulfur content on the modified surfaces.

The radiotracer [F]JK-PSMA-7, a prostate cancer imaging agent for positron emission tomography (PET), was previously synthesized by indirect radiofluorination using an F-labeled active ester as a prosthetic group, which had to be isolated and purified before it could be linked to the pharmacologically active Lys-urea-Glu motif. Although this procedure could be automated on two-reactor modules like the GE TRACERLab FX2N (FXN) to afford the tracer in modest radiochemical yields (RCY) of 18-25%, it is unsuitable for cassette-based systems with a single reactor. To simplify implementation on an automated synthesis module, the radiosynthesis of [F]JK-PSMA-7 was devised as a one-pot, two-step reaction.
