Background/objectives: Telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) is the catalytic subunit of the telomerase enzyme responsible for telomere length maintenance and is an important cancer hallmark. Our study aimed to clarify the mRNA expression of TERT in peritoneal mesothelioma (PeM), and to explore the relationship between its expression and the clinicopathological parameters and prognosis of patients with PeM.

Methods: In a cohort of 13 MpeM patients, we evaluated histotype, nuclear grade, mitotic count, necrosis, inflammation, Ki67, BAP1, MTAP and p16 expression by immunohistochemistry, / status by FISH and TERT mRNA expression by RNAscope.

Results: Our results showed several statistical correlations between TERT mRNA-score and other investigated features: (i) a poor positive correlation with BAP1 score ( = 0.06340; ≤ 0.0001); (ii) a moderate positive correlation with FISH del homo ( = 0.6340; ≤ 0.0001); (iii) a fair negative correlation with FISH del hetero ( = -0.3965; ≤ 0.0001); a negative poor correlation with MTAP ( = -0.2443; ≤ 0.0001); and (iv) a negative fair correlation with inflammatory infiltrate (r = -0.5407; = 0.0233). Moreover, patients survive for a significantly longer time if they have a low mitotic index adjusted (2-4 mitotic figures per 2 mm) ( ≤ 0.0001), are male ( = 0.0152), lose BAP1 ( = 0.0152), are p16 positive and present no deletion or heterozygous for ( ≤ 0.01).

Conclusions: TERT is highly expressed in PeM, but it is not one of the crucial factors in evaluating the prognosis of patients. Nevertheless, the results validate the prognostic significance of the mitotic index, BAP1 loss and /CDKN2A status.

: This study aimed to evaluate whether gender-related anatomical differences in proximal aortic neck morphology affect the feasibility and outcomes of endovascular aortic aneurysm repair (EVAR) in women with abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA). : This study performed a retrospective analysis of patients electively treated by EVAR for infrarenal AAA between January 2019 and December 2023. Demographics, anatomical characteristics, and stent graft details were analyzed.

Research Question: Are the combined genotypes and haplotypes of vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene polymorphisms (FokI, ApaI and TaqI) associated with susceptibility to polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and metabolic features of the disease?

Design: This case-control study included 46 women with PCOS and 48 controls. Genotypes of the VDR gene were determined using the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism method. Waist circumference, and parameters of lipid and glucose metabolism were evaluated in all women.

Article Synopsis
  • Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) are significantly more common in men, but women have a worse prognosis following repair.
  • A study conducted across five hospitals in São Paulo from 2012 to 2022 analyzed data from 951 patients, revealing that while more men were treated, women presented with smaller aneurysms and higher rates of complications, particularly obstructions.
  • The research concluded that despite similar operative mortality rates between genders, women faced more obstructive complications and had smaller aneurysmal diameters.

This umbrella meta-analysis aims to investigate two surgical treatments for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA): endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) and open surgery repair (OSR). Our study aims to elucidate the 30-day mortality rate, reintervention rates, and aneurysm-related mortality in EVAR versus OSR for AAA.  We conducted a comprehensive assessment of meta-analyses ( = 34 articles) comparing EVAR and OSR for AAA.

Background: Accurate dosimetry is crucial in radiotherapy to ensure optimal radiation dose delivery to the tumor while sparing healthy tissues. Traditional dosimetry techniques using homogeneous phantoms may not accurately represent the complex anatomical variations in cervical cancer patients, highlighting the need to compare dosimetry results obtained from different phantom models.

Purpose: The aim of this study is to design and evaluate an anthropomorphic heterogeneous female pelvic (AHFP) phantom for radiotherapy quality assurance in cervical cancer treatment.
