The continuously growing of municipal solid waste (MSW) has posed a threat to human-being. Pyrolysis is a promising technique for MSW disposal, as it can reduce its volume and produce valuable products as well. This study evaluated the potential of carbon residue (CR) derived from waste carton as soil amendment. Additionally, considering the waste plastics, such as plastic bags, plastic tape, etc., can mix with carton in MSW, the effect of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) addition on the characteristics of CR and its environmental behavior was measured. Results showed that the CR derived from carton exhibited notable efficacy in adsorbing Cd (56.111 mg/g), pesticides and PO (0.231 mmol/g), thereby mitigating pollutants and immobilizing nutrient in soil environment. The introduction of PVC was found to enhance the adsorption of CR for Cd (65.623 mg/g) and PO (0.524 mmol/g), albeit exhibiting diminished performance in the removal of pesticides. Different from previous studies, this study revealed that the dissolved black carbon (DBC) released from CRs did not generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) effectively under solar irradiation, and the light screening of DBC can mitigate the photodegradation of pollutants. Furthermore, both CRs increased bacterial luminescence by approximately 70%, which indicated that no toxicity produced during the pyrolysis process. And gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) revealed the absence of polyaromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) in CRs. In summary, this study may provide some new insights on the disposal of MSW, and the CR made by MSW could be effective in soil amendment and reduce the leaching of pollutants and nutrient.

Due to the high toxicity and increasing consumption, efficient removal of phenoxyacetic acid herbicides (PAAHs) from water is imperative. In current study, a new adsorbent was prepared by modifying porous carbon derived from disused floral foam with chitosan (CS) (ACFC). Density functional theory (DFT) calculation uncovered that the amino and hydroxyl groups in the introduced CS played a critical role in the efficient adsorption of ACFC towards PAAHs.

Due to its commercial availability and well-defined structure, the interaction between bovine protein β-lactoglobulin (βLG) and a wide variety of non-native ligands - including transition metal complexes - has been explored, but its application as an artificial metalloenzyme scaffold is limited. This protein is hypothesized to transport fatty acids and other nutrients during juvenile development, and it binds hydrophobic ligands inside a binding pocket constructed upon an 8-stranded β-barrel, called the 'calyx'. Herein, we compare the binding behavior of two rhenium(anthracene-bispyridine) ('Anth-py') tricarbonyl complexes, one with a 12‑carbon chain appended to the ligand scaffold ('Anth-py') to βLG.

Water pollution, resulting from industrial effluents, agricultural runoff, and pharmaceutical residues, poses serious threats to ecosystems and human health, highlighting the need for innovative approaches to effective remediation, particularly for non-biodegradable emerging pollutants. This research work explores the influence of shape-controlled nanocrystalline titanium dioxide (TiO NC), synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method, on the photodegradation efficiency of three different classes of emerging environmental pollutants: phenol, pesticides (methomyl), and drugs (sodium diclofenac). Experiments were conducted to assess the influence of the water matrix on treatment efficiency by using ultrapure water and stormwater (basic) collected from an urban drainage system as matrices.

Slow decomposition rates of cereal crop residues can lead to agronomic challenges, such as nutrient immobilization, delayed soil warming, and increased pest pressures. In this regard, microbial inoculation with efficient strains offers a viable and eco-friendly solution to accelerating the decomposition process of crop residues. However, this solution often focuses mostly on selecting microorganisms based on the appropriate enzymic capabilities and neglects the metabolic versatility required to utilize both structural and non-structural components of residues.

Post-translational modifications of proteins via palmitoylation, a thioester linkage of a 16-carbon fatty acid to a cysteine residue, reversibly increases their affinity for cholesterol-rich lipid rafts in membranes, changing their function. Little is known about how altered palmitoylation affects function at the systemic level and contributes to CNS pathology. However, recent studies suggested a role for the downregulation of palmitoyl acetyltransferase (DHHC) 21 gene expression in the development of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)-like syndrome.
