To promote the recycling of waste glass and satisfy the demands of environmental sustainability for ultrahigh performance concrete (UHPC), in this study, glass sand was employed to partially or entirely replace machine-made sand, and steel fibres were incorporated to fabricate ultrahigh performance shotcrete (UHPS). The effects of glass sand and steel fibres on the mechanical and electrical properties of composite materials were analysed in this study. Furthermore, alkali‒silica reaction (ASR) tests and microstructural analyses were conducted. The results indicate that at higher steel fibre contents, the incorporation of glass sand does not reduce the compressive strength of the UHPS and that glass sand has no significant effect on the split tensile or flexural strength. When the steel fibre content is 2% and the replacement ratio of glass sand reaches 100%, the mechanical properties of the UHPS reach their maximum. The addition of glass sand negatively affects the electrical properties, whereas the use of steel fibres improves them. The results of the alkali‒silica reaction tests confirm that the use of glass sand does not induce harmful expansion reactions. The study revealed the trends in the mechanical and electrical properties of concrete from a microstructural perspective and provided explanations for the alkali‒silica reaction outcomes. This study provides technical support for the application of UHPS to tunnel linings.

Superhydrophobic surfaces have attracted tremendous attention due to their intriguing lotus-leaf-like water-repelling phenomenon and wide applications, however, most superhydrophobic coatings are prepared with environmentally unfriendly organic solvents and suffer from poor mechanical strength. To solve these issues, waterborne recoatable superhydrophobic (WRSH) coatings are developed based on a novel self-synthesized water-soluble fluorinated acrylic polymer and hydrophobic modified silica nanoparticles. The trade-off between waterborne and superhydrophobicity is well mediated by protonation and deprotonation of the fluorinated acrylic polymer.

In this article, the authors present the results of their research on assessing the effect of selected mineral additives on the alkaline reactivity of aggregates. The main objective of this research was to check whether the reactivity of aggregates that do not meet the standard requirements can be reduced. Due to the decreasing availability of crushed aggregates and the decreasing resources of sand used for cement concrete road surfaces, solutions should be sought that allow the use of lower-grade aggregates.

Purpose: This study investigated the effects of femtosecond laser (FL) irradiation on the surface roughness and shear bond strength of high-translucency zirconia (6 mol% yttria-partially stabilized zirconia [6Y-PSZ]) and lithium disilicate (LiSiO) glass ceramics.
Methods: Fully sintered square-shaped specimens of 6Y-PSZ (7 groups; 20 specimens/group) and LiSiO (8 groups; 20 specimens/group) were surface-treated via sandblasting (50-μm alumina sand or glass beads) or FL irradiation (20- or 40-μm dot or cross-line patterns) or using Monobond Etch & Prime (Ivoclar Vivadent AG; only for LiSiO specimens). The surface roughness (arithmetic average [Sa] and developed interfacial area ratio [Sdr]) and shear bond strength after 24 h and 10,000 thermal cycles were measured and statistically analyzed.

Microplastics (MPs) are in some ways the expected product of man-made plastics that are considered as a pollutant ubiquitous in the environment. This is particularly notorious in continental waters, along coastlines, and especially in the North Pacific Gyre, sometimes called the Pacific Garbage Patch. Even now, there is growing concern that MPs can harm wildlife, enter the food chain, and end up in the human body.
