The mitochondria play a key role in maintaining oxygen homeostasis under normal oxygen tension (normoxia) and during oxygen deprivation (hypoxia). This is a critical balancing act between the oxygen content of the blood, the tissue oxygen sensing mechanisms, and the mitochondria, which ultimately consume most oxygen for energy production. We describe the well-defined role of the mitochondria in oxygen metabolism with a special focus on the impact on blood physiology and pathophysiology. Fundamental questions remain regarding the impact of mitochondrial responses to changes in overall blood oxygen content under normoxic and hypoxic states and in the case of impaired oxygen sensing in various cardiovascular and pulmonary complications including blood disorders involving hemolysis and hemoglobin toxicity, ischemia reperfusion, and even in COVID-19 disease. Understanding the nature of the crosstalk among normal homeostatic pathways, oxygen carrying by hemoglobin, utilization of oxygen by the mitochondrial respiratory chain machinery, and oxygen sensing by hypoxia-inducible factor proteins, may provide a target for future therapeutic interventions. 00, 000-000.

Hydrogen is a zero-emissive fuel and has immense potential to replace carbon-emitting fuels in the future. The development of efficient H sensors is essential for preventing hazardous situations and facilitating the widespread usage of hydrogen. Chemiresistors are popular gas sensors owing to their attractive properties such as fast response, miniaturization, simple integration with electronics and low cost.

Confocal microscopy is an invaluable tool for studying fluorescent materials and finds a wide application in biology and in quantum sensing. Usually, these experiments are performed under ambient conditions, but many materials are air sensitive (for example, black phosphorus) and degrade quickly under the strong laser irradiance. Here, we present a glovebox-integrated confocal microscope designed for nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center-based nano-scale sensing and NMR spectroscopy in an inert gas atmosphere.

Peripheral arterial chemoreceptors monitor the levels of arterial blood gases and adjust ventilation and perfusion to meet metabolic demands. These chemoreceptors are present in all vertebrates studied to date but have not been described fully in reptiles other than turtles. The goals of this study were to 1) identify functional chemosensory areas in the South American rattlesnake (Crotalus durissus) 2) determine the neurochemical content of putative chemosensory cells in these areas and 3) determine the role each area plays in ventilatory and cardiovascular control.

The encapsulation of viologen derivatives in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to construct host-guest materials has been widely discussed owing to their distinctive spatial arrangement and physical/chemical properties. Herein, three new photochromic MOFs (NWM-1-3) have been successfully synthesized by 1,1,2,2-Tetra(4-carboxylphenyl)ethylene (H4TCPE) ligand as well as three different viologen derivatives based on host-guest strategy. Remarkably, NWM-1-3 exhibit a notable reversible photochromism change from yellow to green under 365 nm UV irradiation.
