COVID-19, school closures, and student learning outcomes. New global evidence from PISA.

Published: January 2025

The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in significant disruption in schooling worldwide. Global test score data is used to estimate learning losses by modeling the effect of school closures on achievement by predicting the deviation of the most recent results from a linear trend using data from all rounds of PISA. Mathematics scores declined an average of 14 percent of a standard deviation, roughly equal to seven months of learning. Losses are greater for students in schools that faced relatively longer closures, for boys, immigrants, and disadvantaged students. Educational losses may translate into significant national income losses over time.

Objective: The objective of this systematic review of case reports is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of combining surgical sharp debridement with maggot debridement therapy (MDT) for the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs).

Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted across multiple databases, including PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science. Inclusion criteria were studies that reported on the use of surgical sharp debridement alongside MDT for DFUs, while exclusion criteria included insufficient detail on treatment methods or patient outcomes, non-human studies, and non-English publications.

Purpose: To evaluate changes in intraocular pressure (IOP) in dominant and contralateral eyes following the dark room prone provocative test (DRPPT) in the study subjects with shallow anterior chamber.

Methods: This was a prospective, single-center, non-randomized controlled trial of 43 subjects (86 eyes) with shallow anterior chamber. The dominant eye was identified using the card-hole method.

Objective: To investigate the relationship between United States (US) containment measures during the COVID-19 pandemic and household food insecurity.

Design: To investigate these relationships, we developed a framework linking COVID-related containment policies with different domains of food security, then used multilevel random effects models to examine associations between state-level containment policies and household food security. Our framework depicts theorized linkages between stringency policies and five domains of food security (availability, physical access, economic access, acceptability in meeting preferences, and agency, which includes both self-efficacy and infrastructure).
