Thorium ore dust research applicable to mineral sands industry workers.

J Radiol Prot

January 2025

School of Medical and Health Sciences, Edith Cowan University, Joondalup, Western Australia, AUSTRALIA.

Historically, radiation exposure to mineral sands workers arose primarily from intake of thorium associated with monazite dust generated in mineral separation plants. Research investigations in the 1990s provided greater insight into the characteristics of inhaled thorium ore dust and bioassay studies inferred that some workers had accumulated significant lung burdens of thorium. Recent changes to biokinetic models have increased the radiation dose assessed to arise from thorium intake, raising questions on the appropriateness of current assumptions used in exposure assessment and feasibility of further bioassay research.

Monolayer MoS is an effective electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Despite significant efforts to optimize the active sites, its catalytic performance still falls short of theoretical predictions. One key factor that has often been overlooked is the electron injection from the conductive substrate into the MoS.

Reflections on the current context and assessment of undergraduate medical education in Brazil.

Rev Col Bras Cir

January 2025

- Faculdade de Medicina do ABC, Santo André, SP, Brasil. Presidente da Associação Médica Brasileira (AMB).

This reflection article can be divided into two complementary parts. The first shows the current context of medical education in Brazil, bringing the most recent data on the number of undergraduate students and its growing gap in relation to the reduced number of vacancies in medical residency, which, despite being the most appropriate modality to train specialists, has been overlooked by the excessive number of lato sensu graduate courses. The second part discusses the possibilities of evaluating medical training, which is terminal in Brazil, enabling the newly graduated physician to claim the professional registration and to practice medicine, being evaluated only by their own medical course.
