Catenated networks exclusively composed of intertwining rings were first envisioned as "Olympic gels" by Pierre-Gilles de Gennes four decades ago but have not been successfully prepared in artificial materials yet due to the challenge in synthesis. Herein, we present a bio-inspired, evaporation-assisted strategy to address this issue. In our design, the evaporation of liquid catalysts that induce ring-chain equilibrium of polymer systems drives macrocycles to encounter and assists their catenation through reversible cyclization. Complete removal of liquid catalysts stabilizes the resulting ring-interlocked networks by deactivating the catenation-decatenation process. The strategy is demonstrated by the system of hydroxyethyl lipoate (LpHE) and dimethyl formamide (DMF). The results indicate that DMF evaporation leads to the formation of global LpHE polycatenane networks. This evaporation-assisted strategy displays versatility in several tested cyclic monomers, highlighting its potential as a general approach to fabricate ring-interlocked elastomers and topologically intricate materials.

The processing of inclusion bodies (IBs) into surfaces is of great interest for cell culture applications due to the combined physical and biological cues these particles provide. The arrangement of these IBs into defined and tunable micropatterns can be useful for basic research purposes regarding the mechanical properties needed for cell adhesion and migration, among other responses. There are several approaches that can be used when functionalizing a substrate with IBs, regarding both the strategy used and also the kind of surface-particle interaction.

Rare earth (RE) based halide solid electrolytes (HEs) are recently considered as research hotspots in the field of all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs). The RE-based HEs possess high ionic conductivity, credible deformability, and good stability, which can bring excellent electrochemical performances for ASSBs. However, the conventional synthetic methods of RE HEs are a mechanochemical process and co-melting strategy, both approaches require expensive raw materials and sophisticated equipment.

Development of visible-light-responsive oxynitride photocatalysts has been highly inspired for promising solar-to-chemical conversion, but the number of Ti-based oxynitrides is scarce because of the relatively low thermal stability of Ti ions under ammonia flow. Here, the feasible synthesis of a novel perovskite SmTiO N from the layered NaSmTiO precursor is demonstrated to exhibit wide visible-light response with a bandgap of ≈2.1 eV and to show effective water reduction and oxidation functionalities under visible-light irradiation.

The conventional methods of creating superhydrophobic surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) devices are by conformally coating a nanolayer of hydrophobic materials on micro-/nanostructured plasmonic substrates. However, the hydrophobic coating may partially block hot spots and therefore compromise Raman signals of analytes. In this paper, we report a partial Leidenfrost evaporation-assisted approach for ultrasensitive SERS detection of low-concentration analytes in water droplets on hierarchical plasmonic micro-/nanostructures, which are fabricated by integrating nanolaminated metal nanoantennas on carbon nanotube (CNT)-decorated Si micropillar arrays.
