Gas and Liquid Isotherms: The Need for a Common Foundation.

Sorption isotherms for gases and liquids have long been formulated separately. There is a fundamental problem with this approach: the popular isotherm models (such as Langmuir, BET, and GAB) for gases cannot be applied straightforwardly to sorption from solution. This contrasts with the theory of liquid solutions, where solute-solute interaction, mediated by the solvent, is captured as the potential of mean force, providing powerful interpretive tools (e.g., virial expansion) founded on the gas-liquid analogy. This analogy will be extended to sorption by adopting sorbate numbers and their fluctuations as the common foundation. This enables the gas and liquid isotherm equations to have an analogous mathematical form with a universal language for interfaces and liquid solutions.

The capillary break-up of complex fluid filaments occurs in many scientific and industrial applications, particularly in bio-printing where both liquid and polymerized droplets exist in the fluid. The simultaneous presence of fluid and solid particles within a carrier fluid and their interactions lead to deviations in the filament break-up from the well-established capillary breakup dynamics of single-phase liquids. To examine the significance of the dispersed phase and the internal interactions between liquid droplets and solid particles, we prepare emulsions through photopolymerization and conduct experimental investigations into the pinch-off dynamics of fluid filaments, focusing on the impact of varying concentrations of liquid droplets (before polymerization) and polymerized droplets.

In the present research, an attempt has been made to develop a new thin film microextraction method for the extraction of several polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from aqueous samples collected from different industrial units prior to their analysis by gas chromatography combined with a flame ionization detector. In this approach, a thin iron mesh was modified by the formation of iron(II) oxinate on its surface and used for the extraction of analytes without an additional sorbent. For this purpose, first, the mesh was immersed in a sulfuric acid solution and then transferred into an 8-hydroxy quinoline (oxine) solution dissolved in ammonia solution.
