Background: This study aimed to investigate the potential relationship between the newly defined adiposity metric, the Body Roundness Index (BRI), which assesses central obesity, and the development of new-onset hyperuricemia.

Methods: In the Kailuan cohort study from 2006 to 2019, 91,804 eligible participants were included. A multivariate Cox regression model was used to test the correlation between BRI and hyperuricemia. At the same time, the restricted cubic spline was applied to solve the dose-response relationship between BRI and the risk of hyperuricemia. Then, stratified analysis was carried out using multivariate Cox regression according to age, sex, hs-CRP level, TG level, education level, smoking status and hypertension status.

Results: The results showed that the risk of new-onset hyperuricemia was significantly increased in the highest quartile compared with the lowest quartile. After adjusting for confounders, compared with Q1, the HR (95% CI) for new-onset hyperuricemia was 1.24 (1.18-1.30), 1.32 (1.25-1.40), and 1.40 (1.29-1.52) for Q2, Q3, and Q4, respectively. Restricted cubic spline analysis showed a J-curve relationship between baseline BRI levels and new-onset hyperuricaemia. Age, sex, hs-CRP level, TG level, income level, education level, smoking, and hypertension each had a multiplicative interaction with BRI at baseline.

Conclusion: We found that elevated BRI increased the risk of developing new-onset hyperuricaemia. In addition, the association between elevated BRI and the risk of new-onset hyperuricemia showed dependency on age, sex, hs-CRP level, TG level, education level, smoking status and hypertension status.

Non-traditional risk factors for atrial fibrillation: epidemiology, mechanisms, and strategies.

Eur Heart J

Institute and Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital, Shanghai JiaoTong University School of Medicine, No. 639, Zhizaoju Road, Huangpu District, Shanghai 200011, China.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) has become the pre-dominant arrhythmia worldwide and is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Its pathogenesis is intricately linked to the deleterious impact of cardiovascular risk factors, emphasizing the pivotal imperative for early detection and mitigation strategies targeting these factors for the prevention of primary AF. While traditional risk factors are well recognized, an increasing number of novel risk factors have been identified in recent decades.

Metabolic-dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) and serum uric acid are closely related to cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. However, the causal association between MAFLD and serum uric acid remains unclear. A total of 3417 patients without hyperuricemia were included in the final analysis.

Article Synopsis
  • Hyperuricemia, a condition leading to gout, is often caused by high activity of xanthine oxidase, which produces uric acid.
  • This study found that lower bilirubin levels are linked to higher uric acid levels in patients with new-onset hyperuricemia and advanced gout.
  • Researchers showed that bilirubin could reduce uric acid levels in mice by enhancing liver function and cellular processes, suggesting it might offer a new approach for managing hyperuricemia in humans.

Background And Aim: Hyperuricemia is associated with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), whereas whether the association differed by hyperuricemia onset age remained unclear. This study sought to investigate the associations of hyperuricemia onset age with the risk of incident NAFLD across adulthood.

Methods And Results: Based on Kailuan prospective cohort, our analysis comprised 3318 new-onset hyperuricemia cases from 2006 to 2015 and 3318 age- and sex-matched controls who were randomly selected from the general population.
