Exploring diverse biomaterials and implants in the ear, nose, and throat by understanding adverse effects and post-usage events. Literature was obtained from Scopus, PubMed, Google Scholar, and Web of Science. A comprehensive analysis was conducted on original research studies, case reports, and case series spanning from December 2010 to May 2022. Our analysis underscores that the effectiveness of cochlear implants (CIs) relies on factors such as biocompatibility, anti-inflammatory measures, and fibrosis reduction. Although silicone is employed in otologic applications, allergic reactions leading to CI extrusion are rare. In the context of partial ossicular replacement prostheses or total ossicular replacement prostheses, polyethylene grafts (Teflon) are utilized, and Nitinol-pistons are employed in stapedotomy, with adverse consequences encompassing graft extrusion and residual perforation. Chronic sphenoid sinusitis is linked to the use of Medpor porous polyethylene implants in sellar reconstruction during skull-based surgeries. Injectable collagen preparations in vocal cord paralysis lead to submucosal deposits and resultant dysphonia. Montgomery T-tubes are employed for subglottic stenosis but are associated with granulation tissue formation. Metallic tracheostomy tubes give rise to secondary foreign bodies, and double-lumen tracheostomy tubes are prone to biofilm formation. Despite numerous research studies, there remains a necessity for the refinement of implant designs to mitigate complications and enhance the overall quality of life for patients.

In this study, a method for determining the optimal location and orientation of an implantable piezoelectric accelerometer on the short process of the incus is presented. The accelerometer is intended to be used as a replacement for an external microphone to enable totally implantable auditory prostheses. The optimal orientation of the sensor and the best attachment point are determined based on two criteria-maximum pressure sensitivity sum and minimum loudness level sum.

Aim: To evaluate the audiometric results of tympanoplasty with stapedectomy and insertion of a synthetic total ossicular replacement prosthesis (TORP).
Material And Methods: Retrospective observational study conducted on a cohort of 15 patients (16 ears) aged 10 to 58 years (mean: 36 years) with chronic otitis media (COM) and tympanosclerosis (n=9), stapediovestibular ankylosis (n=3), minor aplasia (n=3) or post-traumatic ossicular dislocation (n=1). Treatment consisted in tympanoplasty with stapedectomy and TORP placement by the same operator, between December 1, 2012 and January 30, 2023, in a French university hospital department, with follow-up ranging from 2 to 92 months (mean: 24 months).

Retrospective analysis of clinical data of 123 patients with atticotomy, exploring the clinical characteristics of patients undergoing atticotomy and the efficacy of hearing reconstruction methods. 123 patients with atticotomy were divided into three groups according to the ossicular chain treatment method: preservation of the ossicular chain group(37 cases), cartilage elevation of stapes group(49 cases), and PORP group(37 cases). The clinical characteristics of patients with atticotomy, preoperative and postoperative hearing levels of the three groups of patients, and postoperative complications were analyzed.
