Animals survive in dynamic environments changing at arbitrary timescales, but such data distribution shifts are a challenge to neural networks. To adapt to change, neural systems may change a large number of parameters, which is a slow process involving forgetting past information. In contrast, animals leverage distribution changes to segment their stream of experience into tasks and associate them with internal task abstracts.

Health networking on cancer in the European Union: a 'green paper' by the EU Joint Action on Networks of Expertise (JANE).

ESMO Open

January 2025

Evaluative Epidemiology Unit, Department of Epidemiology and Data Science, Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori, Milan, Italy.

Health networking is in principle a formidable instrument to address many challenges posed by cancer, one of the two most common and most lethal non-communicable chronic diseases. The European Union (EU)'s Beating Cancer Plan foresaw the addition of new health networks to the four already existing European Reference Networks on rare cancers: the Network of Comprehensive Cancer Centres and several networks of expertise (NoEs), which will be shortly deployed on items as complex and poor-prognosis cancers, palliative care, survivorship, personalised primary and secondary prevention, omic technologies, hi-tech medical resources, and cancers in adolescents and young adults. The community of experts of the EU Joint Action, due to build such NoEs, has drafted this 'green paper', incorporating 13 open questions, in an effort to foster discussion on some open questions about health networking on cancer in the EU.

Because of the crucial role of the menisci in maintaining cartilage and joint health, meniscal tears affect the long-term health of the knee. Although partial meniscectomy has a role in the treatment of complex degenerative tears and tears with low healing capacity, advances in the concepts and understanding of meniscal repair, along with improvements in repair techniques and instrumentation, have expanded the indications for meniscal repair. With appropriate patient selection and preoperative planning, repair of meniscal tears can lower the rate of degenerative changes when compared with meniscectomy.

Recently, deep latent variable models have made significant progress in dealing with missing data problems, benefiting from their ability to capture intricate and non-linear relationships within the data. In this work, we further investigate the potential of Variational Autoencoders (VAEs) in addressing the uncertainty associated with missing data via a multiple importance sampling strategy. We propose a Missing data Multiple Importance Sampling Variational Auto-Encoder (MMISVAE) method to effectively model incomplete data.

To explore the safety and clinical efficacy of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) located in the isthmus. This prospective study enrolled patients with single isthmus PTMC admitted to General Surgery Department of 983rd Hospital of Joint Logistic Support Force of PLA from 2017 to 2022. After ablation, the ultrasound and contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) were performed to follow up the outcomes at 1, 3, 6, 12, 18, and 24 months.
