In the United States, zoning and land use policies have been linked to high housing costs and residential segregation. Yet almost all zoning and land use data come from a handful of cross-sectional surveys, which are costly, time intensive, subject to low response rates and measurement error and are quickly dated. As an alternative, we construct the National Zoning and Land Use Database using natural language processing techniques on publicly available administrative data. We show this new database and our parsimonious measure of exclusionary zoning, the Zoning Restrictiveness Index, to be consistent with the Wharton Residential Land Use Regulatory Index (2018) and the National Longitudinal Land Use Survey (2019). Additionally, we overcome other limitations of these survey approaches, both by capturing previously omitted and important elements of land use policy and by revealing the land use regulations for a near-universe of municipalities in the San Francisco and Houston metropolitan statistical areas. We make all code and data publicly available, allowing the National Zoning and Land Use Database to be replicated in future years to ensure accurate, up-to-date and longitudinal nationwide zoning and land use data.

The Chinese government attaches great importance to the ecological restoration of abandoned open-pit mines, increasing the area of cultivated land, and ensuring food security. Soil reconstruction is a crucial step in ecological restoration of abandoned open-pit mines. This study investigated the utilization of hydrophobic sand to create an Air-Permeable Aquiclude (APAC) under the plant root zones, thereby minimizing water infiltration and enhancing soil aeration.

Spatial variation of land use carbon budget and zoning for carbon compensation in the Huai River Eco-economic Belt, China.

Sci Rep

Key Research Base of Philosophy and Social Sciences in Jiangsu Universities, Research Institute of Huai River Eco-economic Belt, Huaiyin Normal University, Huaian, 223300, China.

Carrying out carbon budget assessment and carbon compensation zoning research from inter-regional perspective can actively boost the formulation of green, low-carbon transformation strategies, guiding the flow of compensation credits, promoting regional equity and sustainable development, and realizing China's "dual-carbon" goal. Huai River Eco-economic Belt is considered to be a typical example of how land use affects carbon budget due to its more drastic land changes. The paper uses the carbon emission coefficient method to analyze the carbon revenue and expenditure of kinds of land-use patterns, and constructs the carbon compensation model with the help of the carbon budget concentration index and the dominant comparative advantage index, and puts forward the carbon compensation zoning program.

Spatial variations in urban woodland cooling between background climates.

Sci Rep

Department of Geography, School of Environment, Education and Development, The University of Manchester, Arthur Lewis Building, Oxford Road, Manchester, M13 9PL, UK.

Urban woodland composition and configuration have strong associations with land surface temperatures (LST), but the evidence is contradictory due to different spatial scales, regional climate zones, woodland types and urban contexts. In this study, we analyse associations between urban woodland and LST within and between five cities in different Köppen climate zones. Our consistent methodology is framed around local climate zones and conducted at a fine spatial scale.

Groundwater-dependent ecosystems in areas with industrial land use are at risk of exposure to a PFAS chemicals. We investigated one such system with several known PFAS source areas, where high and low permeability sediments (glacial) coupled with groundwater-lake and groundwater/surface-water interactions created complex 'source to seep' dynamics. Using heat-tracing and chemical methods, numerous preferential groundwater discharge zones were identified and sampled across the upper Quashnet River stream-wetland system in Mashpee, MA, USA, downgradient of Joint Base Cape Cod (JBCC).
