Inspired by ancient trilobites, novel curved microlens arrays (CMLAs) were designed. Direct, fast, and low-cost CMLAs with two focal planes were fabricated using ultraprecision machining technology and hot embossing technology. We designed four pairs of artificial compound eyes (ACEs) composed of large and small lenses with four different curvatures to achieve focusing and imaging on two focal planes. A test system was constructed to capture the first-order and second-order images for each level of the ACEs. Additionally, we analyzed the deformation patterns in the first-order and second-order images. The wide field of view (FOV) value was 68°, which aligns with the theoretical prediction. The focusing performance was also investigated, and the experimental results indicate that each lens achieves uniform focusing within the FOV range. These results confirm that microlens arrays with two focal planes possess advanced imaging and focusing capabilities, enabling a wide depth-of-field function. This opens new avenues for the development of advanced detectors and optical imaging devices.

We study properties of a light field at the tight focus of the superposition of two different-order cylindrical vector beams (CVBs). In the source plane, this superposition has a polarization singularity index amounting to the half-sum of the numbers of two constituent CVBs, while having neither spin angular momentum (SAM) nor transverse energy flow. We show that if the constituent CVBs have different-parity numbers, in the focal plane there occur areas that have opposite-sign longitudinal SAM projections, alongside areas of opposite-handed energy flows rotating on closed paths (clockwise and anticlockwise).

Aqueous zinc-ion battery has low cost, and environmental friendliness, emerging as a promising candidate for next-generation battery systems. However, it still suffers from a limited cycling life, caused by dendritic Zn growth and severe side reactions. Recent research highlights that the Zn (002) crystal plane exhibits superior anti-corrosive properties and a horizontal growth pattern.

This work uses MoTe single crystals to address the challenge in heterogeneous catalysis of identifying active sites and determining the electronic factors responsible for catalytic activity. We find that for semiconducting MoTe, spots that fall along step edges show more catalytic activity than spots that fall solely on the basal plane. In contrast, for a semimetallic phase of MoTe, there is no measurable difference between the H evolution activity at the step edges and at the basal plane, indicating that the active sites for H evolution catalysis on transition metal dichalcogenides are phase dependent.

Analysis of the symmetry of the brain hemispheres at the level of individual structures and dominant tissue features has been the subject of research for many years in the context of improving the effectiveness of imaging methods for the diagnosis of brain tumor, stroke, and Alzheimer's disease, among others. One useful approach is to reliably determine the midline of the brain, which allows comparative analysis of the hemispheres and uncovers information on symmetry/asymmetry in the relevant planes of, for example, CT scans. Therefore, an effective method that is robust to various geometric deformations, artifacts, varying noise characteristics, and natural anatomical variability is sought.

With the emergence of numerous classifications, surgical treatment for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) can be guided more effectively. However, surgical decision-making and optimal strategies still lack standardization and personalized customization. Our study aims to devise proper deep learning (DL) models that incorporate key factors influencing surgical outcomes on the coronal plane in AIS patients to facilitate surgical decision-making and predict surgical results for AIS patients.
