Terahertz (THz) parametric detection is a highly sensitive method that upconverts a THz wave into a near-infrared beam for detection. Lithium niobate has primarily been used as the nonlinear optical crystal in this approach. However, the frequency band with high parametric gain is limited, leading to increasing interest in other nonlinear optical crystals. Here, we demonstrate that lithium tantalate provides high-sensitivity detection at low frequencies, achieving a maximum improvement of 15 dB over the 0.8-1.5 THz band.

Comparing spirometry, impulse oscillometry with computed tomography for assessing small airway dysfunction in subjects with and without chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

BMC Pulm Med

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Respiratory Disease & National Clinical Research Center for Respiratory Disease & National Center for Respiratory Medicine & Guangzhou Institute of Respiratory Health, The First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University, Guangzhou, 510120, China.

Background: Studies on consistency among spirometry, impulse oscillometry (IOS), and histology for detecting small airway dysfunction (SAD) remain scarce. Considering invasiveness of lung histopathology, we aimed to compare spirometry and IOS with chest computed tomography (CT) for SAD detection, and evaluate clinical characteristics of subjects with SAD assessed by these three techniques.

Methods: We collected baseline data from the Early COPD (ECOPD) study.

White light cystoscopy is a precise instrument for the detection and treatment of papillary bladder tumors. Various additional macroscopic detection methods have been established. Some of them, especially PDD or NBI, have been shown to have an additional benefit on the recurrence rate of bladder tumors, so they should be used as part of the diagnosis and treatment when available.

Dual-task-related gait patterns as possible marker of precocious and subclinical cognitive alterations in Parkinson disease.

Sci Rep

Department of Medicine, Surgery and Dentistry, Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (CEMAND), University of Salerno, Fisciano, Italy.

Subtle gait and cognitive dysfunction are common in Parkinson's disease (PD), even before most evident clinical manifestations. Such alterations can be assumed as hypothetical phenotypical and prognostic/progression markers. To compare spatiotemporal gait parameters in PD patients with three cognitive status: cognitively intact (PD-noCI), with subjective cognitive impairment (PD-SCI) and with mild cognitive impairment (PD-MCI) in order to detect subclinical gait differences.

The range of sensor technologies for structural health monitoring (SHM) systems is expanding as the need for ongoing structural monitoring increases. In such a case, damage to the monitored structure elements is detected using an integrated network of sensors operating in real-time or periodically in frequent time stamps. This paper briefly introduces a new type of sensor, called a Customized Crack Propagation Sensor (CCPS), which is an alternative for crack gauges, but with enhanced functional features and customizability.

This study aims to evaluate the quantitative changes in retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness and radial peripapillary capillary (RPC) vessel density in patients with chronic central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR), specifically excluding the peripapillary region. A prospective case-control study was conducted at the Antalya Training and Research Hospital, Health Sciences University, involving 65 patients with chronic CSCR. Participants were categorized into two groups based on the presence or regression of subretinal fluid (SRF).
