Sunlight irradiation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in surface water results in the production of photochemically produced reactive intermediates (PPRIs). This process is inevitably influenced by co-existing metal ions in aquatic environments; However, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. In this study, the effect of co-existing copper ion (Cu) on PPRIs produced by irradiation of DOM was systematically investigated, because Cu is a typical redox transient cation and has strong affinity to DOM. The findings demonstrated that Cu, acting as cation bridge, caused DOM to aggregate, and had impacts on the optical properties and conformation of DOM. The electron shuttle and catalyst effect of Cu could accelerate the charge transfer processes for the increasing of quantum yield and steady concentrations of hydroxyl radical (·OH) with the increase of concentrations of e, O, hydrogen peroxide (HO) and charge separated states of DOM (DOM or DOM); On the other hand, Cu, as excited state quencher, decrease of apparent quantum yield of triplet state of DOM (DOM*) and singlet oxygen (O) through static quenching of singlet excited of DOM (DOM*) and dynamic quenching of DOM*, respectively. The results provide a deeper understanding of the effect mechanism of Cu on the DOM photochemistry in real environment and will be useful for assessment the photodegradation of organic contaminants in the presence of both DOM and Cu.

The ultraviolet-activated peroxymosnofulate (UV/PMS) system, an effective advanced oxidation process for removing dissolved organic matter (DOM) from wastewater, is limited by high chloride ion (Cl) concentrations in landfill leachate. This study used Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry to explore the transformation of DOM in the UV/PMS system with a high Cl concentration. The results revealed that elevated Cl levels generate reactive chlorine species, including chlorine radicals, dichlorine radicals, and hypochlorous acid/hypochlorite, reducing the total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiency of Suwannee River natural organic matter (SRNOM) from 78.

Background: Medications targeting the leptin and Apolipoprotein CIII (APOC3) pathways are currently under development for the treatment of hypertriglyceridaemia. Given that both pathways are implicated in triglyceride regulation, it is unknown whether they function independently or interact under physiological conditions and under acute or long-term energy deficiency.
Methods: APOC3 levels and their association with circulating lipids and lipoproteins were evaluated in the context of two randomised controlled studies.

Background: Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) makes up nearly half of all chronic kidney disease cases and is a major cause of mortality for people with diabetes. However, the study of the association of longitudinal Chinese visceral adiposity index (CVAI) with DKD is still missing.
Methods: This prospective cohort study included 7874 diabetes patients from the Kailuan study.

Background & Aims: This study assessed the association of remission of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) or metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD)/related SLD (r-SLD; MASLD with excessive alcohol intake) as defined by the fatty liver index with the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD).
Methods: Health examination data at baseline and after 2 years (2-Years) were extracted from a nationwide claims database in Japan. Among participants aged 18-72 years with at least 3 years of follow-up, 9345 participants with DM-associated MASLD/r-SLD and 71 932 participants with non-DM MASLD/r-SLD at baseline were included in the study.
