In the present study, we experimentally investigate the liquid flow induced in a rotating drum (cylindrical tank with a short aspect ratio) aligned horizontally, focusing on the variation in the time-averaged and fluctuating flow structures with different fill ratios. For each fill ratio, controlled by varying the water height, we measure the velocity fields at different cross-sectional planes with particle image velocimetry while varying the rotational speed of the drum. Compared to the condition of a fill ratio of 1.0, in which the liquid inside the drum rotates forming a large-scale (solid-body rotation) organized flow structure, a substantial asymmetric flow structure shows up in partially-filled conditions driven by the imbalance between (i) the momentum diffusion along the radial direction and the centrifugal acceleration, and (ii) the downward (gravitational) flux of the induced flow. In addition to the mean flow structure, we examine the fluctuating velocity fields together with the dynamics of the free surface, and we also briefly discuss the difference between the liquid flow and granular (particle) flow in a partially-filled drum. We think that the present results provide valuable insights on the partially-filled liquid drum toward various engineering applications.

The objective of this study is to explore how adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) regulate mitochondrial structure and function and the impact of this regulation on slowing cellular senescence. HFF-1 cells were induced by HO to establish a cellular senescence model, and ASCs or Mdivi-1 (mitochondrial fission inhibitor) was added. MTT examined the cell proliferation; flow cytometry detected mitochondrial membrane potential as well as apoptosis and cell cycle; kit measured ATP production; ELISA analyzed the levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β), tumor necrosis factor alpha-like (TNF-α), glutathione (GSH), malondialdehyde (MDA), and superoxide dismutase (SOD); Western blotting and qRT-PCR detected the expression of protein and mRNA levels; and β-galactosidase staining observed the degree of cellular senescence.

In the subauroral zone at the boundary of the auroral oval in the evening and night hours during geomagnetic disturbances, a narrow (about 1°-2°) and extended structure (several hours in longitude) is formed. It is known as a polarization jet (PJ) or the subauroral ion drift (SAID). The PJ/SAID is a fast westward ion drift and is one of the main signatures of a geomagnetic disturbance in the subauroral ionosphere at the altitudes of the F-layer, when the geomagnetic AE index reaches more than 500 nT.

The airflow in the transport channel contributes to the accelerated straightening of the hooked fibers, which greatly influences the structural properties of the yarn. To study the straightening process of hooked fiber in the fiber transport channel, Altair EDEM 2022 software was used to establish flexible fiber models, and combined with ANSYS Fluent 2022R1 simulation software, the fluid-solid coupling method was used to simulate the air velocity distribution in the fiber transport channel and the straightening process of the hooked fibers in the airflow field. The numerical simulated air flow is verified by Hagen-Poissuille pipe flow equation.

In the typical ionothermal synthesis of crystalline carbon nitride (CCN), alkali metal halides are usually used in large amounts. Here, we report a new method for synthesizing poly (heptazine imide) (PHI) using only a trace amount of NaF, which is 20 times less than the amount of NaCl typically required to achieve the PHI structure. Different from the prevailing view that salts function primarily as templates and chelating agents during polymerization, our research revealed the unique role that NaF plays in the polymerization of PHI.
