Published: January 2025

Molecular dynamics simulations demonstrate that regular conical helices of poly(-phenylene) (PPP) chains can be constructed inside the confined space of single-walled carbon nanocones (CNCs). The translocation displacement of the PPP chain combined with the change of the system total potential energy including each energy component and structural parameters of the formed conical helix is discussed to deeply explore the microstructure evolution, driving forces and dynamic mechanisms. In addition, the influence of chain length, cone angle, temperature, chain number, linked position of benzene rings and the form of Lennard-Jones potential on the helical encapsulation is further studied. The proposed method may provide a new way for constructing regular conical helices from polymer chains, with potential applications in electronic nanodevices.

The hydrogen exchange reaction, H + H → H + H, along with its isotopic variants, has been the cornerstone for the development of new and novel dynamical mechanisms of gas-phase bimolecular reactions since the 1930s. The dynamics of this reaction are theoretically investigated in this work to elucidate the effect of reagent vibrational excitation on differential cross sections (DCSs) in a nonadiabatic situation. The dynamical calculations are carried out using a time-dependent quantum mechanical method, both on the lower adiabatic potential energy surface and employing a two-state coupled diabatic theoretical model to explicitly include all the nonadiabatic couplings present in the 1E' ground electronic manifold of the H system.

Spin Spiral State at a Ferromagnetic Gd Vacuum Interface.

Physikalisches Institut, Experimentelle Physik II, Universität Würzburg, Am Hubland, 97074 Würzburg, Germany.

Centrosymmetric bulk magnets made of layered Gd intermetallics had been discovered recently to exhibit helical spin spirals with a wavelength of ≈2  nm that transform into skyrmion lattices at certain magnetic fields. Here we report on the observation of a spin spiral state at the Gd(0001) surface. Spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy images show striped regions with a periodicity of about 2 nm.

Article Synopsis
  • Helico-conical optical beams (HCOBs) are unique beams that carry orbital angular momentum and have a helical intensity pattern, making them valuable in areas like optical communication and tweezers.
  • This study presents a method to create dual bi-power-exponent helico-conical beams using advanced metasurfaces, allowing better control over beam shapes and intensities with simple polarized light.
  • The research simplifies the design of metasurfaces and shows their potential in generating complex optical beam patterns, which could lead to new developments in integrated optical systems.

The Role of Cholesterol in M2 Clustering and Viral Budding Explained.

The influenza A M2 homotetrameric channel consists of four transmembrane (TM) and four amphipathic helices (AHs). This viral proton channel is suggested to form clusters in the catenoid budding neck areas in raft-like domains of the plasma membrane, resulting in cell membrane scission and viral release. The channel clustering environment is rich in cholesterol.
