Background: Food safety has attracted increasing attention in recent years. Harmful gases often produced during food storage have devastating effects on human health and ecosystems, and identifying and detecting them is essential. To date, many traditional methods have been used to monitor the freshness of food products. These methods have high precision and sensitivity, but their application to daily life is limited because they are time-consuming and require complex instruments. Therefore, the development of simple, rapid, and low-cost methods for evaluating food freshness is essential.
Results: Hydrogel-based colorimetric artificial olfactory systems have attracted a great deal of attention and have been widely applied in the field of food safety testing in recent years. The system has the advantages of a low detection limit, portability, onsite monitoring, high precision and rapid detection. This superiority makes the colorimetric hydrogel gas sensor a strong contender for improving food safety detection. This paper reviews the application of a hydrogel-based colorimetric artificial olfactory system for detecting hazardous gases for food safety purposes. The main sections of this review succinctly discuss the construction principles and operational mechanisms of the colorimetric artificial olfactory system. Additionally, it delves into the selection and preparation methodologies of hydrogel materials. This paper focuses on advancements in hydrogel-based colorimetric artificial olfactory systems for detecting gases, such as ammonia, biogenic amines, and HS that are relevant to food safety. Furthermore, this work outlines the challenges encountered by this artificial olfactory system and proposes potential solutions to overcome them.
Significance And Novelty: The study presented in this paper demonstrates the potential application of a hydrogel-based colorimetric artificial olfactory system for food safety detection, and complements the previous review of colorimetric hydrogel gas sensors for the detection of spoilage gases in food products and serves as a reference for further advanced research and applications in this field.

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a global surge in patients presenting with prolonged or late-onset debilitating sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection, colloquially termed long COVID. This narrative review provides an updated synthesis of the latest evidence on the neurological manifestations of long COVID, discussing its clinical phenotypes, underlying pathophysiology, while also presenting the current state of diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. Approximately one-third of COVID-19 survivors experience prolonged neurological sequelae that persist for at least 12-months post-infection, adversely affecting patients' quality of life.

Natural olfactory systems possess remarkable sensitivity and precision beyond what is currently achievable by engineered gas sensors. Unlike their artificial counterparts, noses are capable of distinguishing scents associated with mixtures of volatile molecules in complex, typically fluctuating environments and can adapt to changes. This perspective examines the multifaceted biological principles that provide olfactory systems their discriminatory prowess, and how these ideas can be ported to the design of electronic noses for substantial improvements in performance across metrics such as sensitivity and ability to speciate chemical mixtures.

The photoperiod has been considered to be a key environmental factor in sheep reproduction, and some studies have shown that the thyroid gland plays an important role in mammalian reproduction, but the molecular mechanism is still unclear. In this study, we used the artificial-light-controlled, ovariectomized, and estradiol-treated model (OVX + E2 model); healthy and consistent 2-3-year-old Sunite multiparous ewes were collected; and thyroids were collected for testing, combined with RNA-seq technology and bioinformatics analysis, to analyze the effects of different photoperiods (long photoperiod treatment for 42 days, LP42; short photoperiod treatment for 42 days, SP42; SP42 transferred to LP42, SPLP42) on the variations in the miRNA profiles of the thyroid gland. A total of 105 miRNAs were differentially expressed in the thyroid gland, most of which were new miRNAs.
