Published: January 2025

The artistic and scientific perspectives of the translucent color organic solar cells (OSCs), made with the emerging narrowband nonfullerene acceptors are explored. The translucent color OSCs, comprising a Fabry-Pérot microcavity optical coupling layer, have a power conversion efficiency of >15% and a maximum transparency of >20% for the three primary colors. The performance-color relationship of the translucent color OSCs is analyzed using a combination of high-throughput optical computing and experimental optimization, allowing light with desired color to pass through, while absorbing enough light to generate electricity. Replication of Piet Mondrian's artwork "Composition C (1920)" is demonstrated using a 10 × 10 cm-sized translucent OSC module with a wide palette of colors and hues. The outcome of the work offers an opportunity for translucent color OSCs to function as both esthetic art and power generating windowpanes for use in our homes, offices, and even greenhouses.

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate and compare the antibacterial properties and optical characteristics of clear orthodontic aligners coated with zinc oxide (ZnO) and magnesium oxide (MgO) nanoparticles.

Materials And Methods: In this experimental laboratory study, polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PETG) aligner samples were coated with nanoparticles of ZnO, MgO and a combination of both (ZnO + MgO). The surface coatings were analysed before and after stability testing using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM).

Little information exists on the interactions between microfibres (MFs) and marine macroalgae. In this study, the translucent green seaweed, Ulva lactuca, has been exposed to ∼2 mg L suspensions of MFs prepared from dryer lint under controlled conditions, with MFs on the alga surface and remaining in seawater subsequently counted and characterised. MFs were mainly <2 mm and cellulosic, and contained various additives and chemicals used in textile treatment.

Objective: To evaluate the influence of in situ acid erosion on the structural and optical properties of nanoparticulate bisacrylic resin with different surface treatments, evaluating surface roughness (Ra), knoop microhardness (KHN), color change (ΔE, ΔL, ΔC, ΔH), contrast (CR) and translucency (TP).

Methods: Eighty specimens were made (n = 10 per group) and the following surface treatments were applied: U-unpolished; A-polishing with Astropol rubber tips (Ivoclar); S-Biscover LV surface sealant (Bisco) and S-Palaseal surface sealant (kulzer). For the in situ experiment, 10 volunteers wore an intraoral appliance containing eight specimens (two specimens per experimental group), with only one specimen from each experimental group being subjected to the acid process.
