Thromboprophylaxis and adult congenital heart disease: The latest on indications, risk scoring and therapy.

Int J Cardiol Congenit Heart Dis

March 2025

Adult Congenital Heart Centre and Centre for Pulmonary Hypertension, Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospitals, Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation, London, United Kingdom.

Advances in medical care have significantly extended the lifespan of patients with congenital heart disease (CHD), allowing most to survive into adulthood. However, they continue to face significant cardiovascular morbidity, particularly atrial arrhythmias (AA), heart failure, and thromboembolic (TE) events. TE events in adult CHD patients arise from various factors, including AA, intracardiac repairs, cyanotic CHD, Fontan palliation, pregnancy, and mechanical heart valves (MHV).

Entecavir and penciclovir are nucleoside-analog antiviral drugs structurally related to guanine that act by inhibiting the active viral replication process. Through this study, the quantitation of both drugs was carried out using two fluorescent probes, referred to as fluoroprobes. The first type was prepared by the addition of surfactants such as Tween 80 and sodium dodecyl sulfate (micelle-enhanced fluoroprobes), while the second type includes the formation of a tertiary complex of drug-terbium-DNA (Tb-DNA fluoroprobes).

Background: Within palliative care, family meetings are recognised as the most effective practice for placing the patient and their family at the centre of care, thereby ensuring quality palliative care. The aim of this study was to determine how these meetings are conducted in primary healthcare and to identify the factors influencing them.

Methods: Sixteen semi-structured interviews were conducted with family physicians (FP) in Slovenia, who were expressly, and using the snowball method, invited to participate in the study.

Reappraisal of statin primary prevention trials: implications for identification of the statin-eligible primary prevention patient.

Eur J Prev Cardiol

February 2025

Departments of Medicine and Biochemistry, Division of Endocrinology, Robarts Research Institute, University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario  CANADA.

Background And Aims: Identification of patients eligible for primary prevention statin therapy is complex, often relying upon risk algorithms that diverge internationally. Our goal was to develop a simpler global definition of statin-eligible primary prevention patients.

Methods: Randomized clinical trials (RCTs) cited in North American and European dyslipidemia guidelines justifying primary prevention statins for cardiovascular risk reduction were critically reappraised according to eligibility criteria and characteristics of actual enrollees.

Systematic review of innate immune responses against complex infection in animal models.

Front Immunol

February 2025

Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Pathology, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO, United States.

Background: complex (MTBC) includes ten species that affect mammals and pose a significant global health concern. Upon infection, induces various stages in the host, including early bacterial elimination, which may or may not involve memory responses. Deciphering the role of innate immune responses during MTBC infection is crucial for understanding disease progression or protection.
