Waste slurry, a major by-product of urban construction, is produced in rapidly increasing volumes each year. Dehydrated waste slurry has potential as a roadbed material; however, its performance in freeze-thaw environments, which can induce frost heave and thaw settlement, and the mechanism of the influence of freeze-thaw cycles on its macro and micro properties are still unclear and need thorough investigation. This study explores the macroscopic and microscopic properties of waste slurry subjected to freeze-thaw cycles. We conducted unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and triaxial unconsolidated undrained (UU) shear tests, focusing on fissure compaction, elastic deformation, plastic yielding, and strain hardening stages. The results reveal a decrease in strength and elastic modulus with increasing freeze-thaw cycles, as well as in the damage degree generated by freeze-thaw cycles. To uncover the underlying microscopic mechanisms, we performed Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) analyses. These tests highlighted the evolution of pores and microcracks during freeze-thaw cycles. These results have important reference values for the reutilization of waste slurry discharged from large-diameter bored piles for roadbed backfill materials that need to be repaired quickly in seasonally frozen areas.

Defects can be introduced into shotcrete materials after a few freeze-thaw cycles, which has a significant influence on the fracture performance of shotcrete. In this study, a series of shotcrete specimens with varying sizes, geometries, and initial crack lengths were prepared to investigate the fracture properties of notched shotcrete under freeze-thaw conditions. Considering the effects of specimen boundaries and material microstructure, a linear closed-form solution was proposed to determine the fracture toughness of frost-damaged shotcrete.

Cemented Sand, Gravel, and Rock (CSGR) dams have traditionally used either Conventional Vibrated Concrete (CVC) or Grout-Enriched Roller Compacted Concrete (GERCC) for protective and seepage control layers in low- to medium-height dams. However, these methods are complex, prone to interference, and uneconomical due to significant differences in the expansion coefficient, elastic modulus, and hydration heat parameters among CSGR, CVC, and GERCC. This complexity complicates quality control during construction, leading to the development of Grout-Enriched Vibrated Cemented Sand, Gravel, and Rock (GECSGR) as an alternative.

This article presents the procedure for designing self-compacting cement concrete characterized by minimal free space and a maximally compacted mineral skeleton. Such a designed mix allows for lower cement consumption and an increased amount of mineral additives. The paper presents a broad analysis of the influence of different aggregate proportions (36 recipes) and verification of the properties of the concrete mix using CEM I 42.
