Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is changing the practice of nearly all specialties and is increasingly being incorporated as a bedside tool by more gastroenterologists and hepatologists. POCUS is most often used to answer focused clinical questions, supplement the traditional physical examination, and guide performance of invasive bedside procedures. This review describes several common POCUS applications used in gastroenterology and hepatology, as well as some novel applications that warrant further investigation.

The gold standard diagnosis for malaria is the microscopic visualization of blood smears to identify parasites, although it is an expert-dependent technique and could trigger diagnostic errors. Artificial intelligence (AI) tools based on digital image analysis were postulated as a suitable supportive alternative for automated malaria diagnosis. A diagnostic evaluation of the AI-based system was conducted in the reference laboratory of the International Health Unit Drassanes-Vall d'Hebron in Barcelona, Spain.

Department of General Medicine, Graduate School of Medical and Dental Sciences, Institute of Science Tokyo, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo 113-8510, Japan.

: The effects of ageing on the diaphragm are unclear. This study examined the association between ageing and diaphragm thickness, thickening fraction (TF), and diaphragm excursion (DE) as assessed by ultrasonography after adjusting for other factors. The relationship between these parameters and maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP) was also investigated.

Background: There exists no standardized longitudinal curriculum for teaching bedside ultrasonography (US) in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine (PCCM) fellowship programs. Given the importance of mastering bedside US in clinical practice, we developed an integrated year-long US curriculum for first-year PCCM fellows.

Methods: 11 first-year PCCM fellows completed the entire seven-step Blended Learning Curriculum.

Point-of-care ultrasound may be used for identification of thoracic pathology, including mediastinal masses. In this case report, we describe the case of an otherwise healthy 17-year-old boy who presented with generalized pruritis. Point-of-care ultrasound was useful in identifying a complex cystic and solid mediastinal mass extending into the thoracic cavities as well as an associated pericardial effusion.
