It was first spotted in 1890 as part of a household guide for beauty preservation. Subsequently, the idea became a tagline in dental advertisements for Colgate Ribbon Toothpaste, Dr. Lyon's Dentifrice from 1913, and Pepsodent toothpaste starting in 1926.
