Background: Early detection is crucial for the timely intervention and management of dementia, potentially slowing its progression. Early stages of dementia might only subtly affect communication, yet connected speech analysis can detect these minor anomalies. Cognitive tests involving connected speech, like the Boston Diagnostic Aphasia Examination's (BDAE) "cookie-theft" picture description task, are pivotal in detecting dementia. However, previous research typically treats their responses as a whole.

Method: This study preprocesses connected speech from the "cookie theft" task to facilitate AI-driven detection improvements. We analyzed narratives from 54 normal subjects, 26 with MCI, and 38 with Alzheimer's Disease (AD), focusing on nine major concepts to quantify accuracy across groups.

Result: Differences in concept accuracy were significant even among normal individuals. A detailed analysis revealed that concepts 3 and 1 were particularly effective in differentiating between normal individuals and those with cognitive impairments, and between MCI and AD. Concepts 2, 3, and 7 were crucial for distinguishing between normal and MCI subjects. Concepts 4, 5, 8, and 9 showed no discriminatory power.

Conclusion: Advances in technology, particularly in natural language processing (NLP), allow for the automated analysis of connected speech. It can provide quick and reliable assessments. By categorizing and preprocessing speech data before AI analysis, our approach enhances the model's predictive accuracy for early-stage dementia detection. It can also help for developing more diagnostic images and cognitive training exercises. Furthermore, it does not require expensive equipment or invasive procedures, making it accessible for widespread use in various settings, including community centers and primary care, and particularly beneficial for regular monitoring.

Objectives: To investigate the influence of frequency-specific audibility on audiovisual benefit in children, this study examined the impact of high- and low-pass acoustic filtering on auditory-only and audiovisual word and sentence recognition in children with typical hearing. Previous studies show that visual speech provides greater access to consonant place of articulation than other consonant features and that low-pass filtering has a strong impact on perception on acoustic consonant place of articulation. This suggests visual speech may be particularly useful when acoustic speech is low-pass filtered because it provides complementary information about consonant place of articulation.

In this investigation, we delve into the neural underpinnings of auditory processing of Sanskrit verse comprehension, an area not previously explored by neuroscientific research. Our study examines a diverse group of 44 bilingual individuals, including both proficient and non-proficient Sanskrit speakers, to uncover the intricate neural patterns involved in processing verses of this ancient language. Employing an integrated neuroimaging approach that combines functional connectivity-multivariate pattern analysis (fc-MVPA), voxel-based univariate analysis, seed-based connectivity analysis, and the use of sparse fMRI techniques to minimize the interference of scanner noise, we highlight the brain's adaptability and ability to integrate multiple types of information.

Background: Speech abnormalities are increasingly recognized as a manifestation of cognitive deficits in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and its preclinical and prodromal stages. Here, we investigated whether MRI measures of brain atrophy, specifically in the basal forebrain and cortical language areas, can predict cognitive decline and speech difficulties in older adults within the AD spectrum.

Method: The ongoing Prospect-AD study aims to develop an algorithm to automatically identify speech biomarkers in individuals with early signs of AD.

Background: Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) can present with different clinical variants which show distinct, but partially overlapping, patterns of neurodegeneration and tau deposition in a PSP network of regions, including cerebellar dentate, superior cerebellar peduncle, midbrain, thalamus, basal ganglia, and frontal lobe. We sought to determine whether disruptions in functional connectivity within this PSP network measured using resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) differed between PSP-Richardson's syndrome and the cortical and subcortical variants of PSP.

Method: Structural MRI and rs-fMRI scans were collected for 40 PSP-RS, 24 PSP-cortical (12 speech and language; 10 corticobasal syndrome; 2 frontal) and 36 PSP-subcortical (18 parkinsonism; 11 progressive gait freezing; 6 postural instability; 1 oculomotor) participants who met the Movement Disorder Society PSP clinical criteria (Table 1).
