The use of metalwork, such as screws and plates, is common in orthopaedic trauma surgery, with a recent trend towards individually packed metalwork owing to concerns about sterilization efficacy and traceability. Despite this, there is no clinical evidence proving clinical risk from repeat sterilization of metalworks used in orthopaedic trauma of either increased infection rates or loosening or implant failure. On the contrary, the use of individually packed metalworks presents several practical challenges, including higher costs, increased risks of contamination, longer operative times and a larger carbon footprint. This review underscores the need for further validation of individually packed metalwork in orthopaedic trauma surgery.

Synthesis and diverse crystal packing in o-, m- and p-bis(carbonylthioureido)benzenes containing bisferrocenes.

Acta Crystallogr C Struct Chem

Institute of Applied Chemistry, Shanxi University, Wucheng, Taiyuan, Shanxi 030006, People's Republic of China.

Three bisferrocene-based bis(acylthiourea) positional isomers, namely, 1,2-bis(ferrocenylcarbonylthioureido)benzene (1), 1,3-bis(ferrocenylcarbonylthioureido)benzene (2) and 1,4-bis(ferrocenylcarbonylthioureido)benzene (3), all [Fe(CH)(CHNOS)], have been synthesized via facile nucleophilic addition reactions of 2.3 equivalents of ferrocenoyl isothiocyanate with o-, m- and p-phenylenediamine, respectively. The structures of the three new synthesized isomers were fully characterized by H NMR, C NMR, IR and UV-Vis spectroscopy, elemental analyses and cyclic voltammetry.

The production, conversion and storage of energy based on electrocatalysis, mainly assisted by oxygen evolution reaction (OER), plays a crucial role in alkaline water electrolyzers (AWEs) and fuel cells. Nevertheless, the insufficient availability of highly efficient catalyst materials at a reasonable cost that overcome the sluggish electrochemical kinetics of the OER is one of the significant obstacles. Herein, we report a fast and facile synthesis of vapor phase deposition of dual-phase nickel sulfide (Ni-sulfide) using low-temperature annealing in the presence of HS and demonstrated as an efficient catalyst for OER to address the issues with sluggish electrochemical kinetics.

Comparison of the effects of production and processing parameters on the eating quality of lamb.

Animal

December 2024

Hybu Cig Cymru - Meat Promotion Wales, Ty Rheidol, Parc Merlin, Glan Yr Afon Industrial Estate, Aberystwyth, SY23 3FF, UK.

While many separate research studies have investigated the effect of production and processing factors on eating quality of lamb, the relative impact of these parameters has been difficult to ascertain. In this study, the effect of eighteen production and processing factors on the eating quality of Welsh Lamb was compared, using meat from 624 lambs and assessments by 1920 UK consumers. Four experimental trials provided a balanced assessment of production and processing factors: muscle, breed type, lamb gender, ageing, finishing diet, season, carcase hanging and packaging method.

Biological neural systems seamlessly integrate perception and action, a feat not efficiently replicated in current physically separated designs of neural-imitating electronics. This segregation hinders coordination and functionality within the neuromorphic system. Here, we present a flexible device tailored for neuromorphic computation and muscle actuation.

Integration of ordered porous materials for targeted three-component gas separation.

Nat Commun

Key Laboratory of Special Functional and Smart Polymer Materials of Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, Xi'an Key Laboratory of Functional Organic Porous Materials, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Northwestern Polytechnical University, Xi'an, Shaanxi, China.

Separation of multi-component mixtures in an energy-efficient manner has important practical impact in chemical industry but is highly challenging. Especially, targeted simultaneous removal of multiple impurities to purify the desired product in one-step separation process is an extremely difficult task. We introduced a pore integration strategy of modularizing ordered pore structures with specific functions for on-demand assembly to deal with complex multi-component separation systems, which are unattainable by each individual pore.
