Limestone (LS) and stabilised secondary spruce chips (SCs) utilisation in wood-cement composites is still an unexplored area. Therefore, the main objective of the research presented here is the assessment of the long-term behaviour of cement-bonded particleboards (CBPs) modified by LS and SCs. Cement (CE) was replaced by 10% of LS, and spruce chips by 7% of SCs. The test specimens were stored in a laboratory and exterior environment (Middle Europe) for up to 2 years. The density, strength, and modulus of elasticity were evaluated after 28 days, and then in 6-month periods. The hygroscopicity was analysed separately. The mineralogical composition and microstructure were analysed due to possible LS participation during hydration. SC synergic behaviour in CBPs was also studied. After 2 years, the microstructure of the CBP was more compact, and denser. Strong carbonatation contributes to the improvement of CBP properties. The products of carbonatation were present in both the matrix and wood chips. The hydration of the matrix was almost finished. LS has a positive effect on the matrix microstructure development. LS acts both as an active component participating in the formation of the cement matrix structure and as an inert microfiller, synergic with hydration products. SCs have a positive effect on the hygroscopic behaviour of CBPs and slightly negative effect on the tensile strength.

The research conducted on kraft cooking of for different chip sizes is often not representative for the industrial process since the chip size fractions were made of high-quality wood without impurities. We evaluated the effects and the potential of cooking non ideal spruce chip fractions after industrial chipping and screening. The chips were classified according to SCAN 40:01, and the respective fractions were cooked under the identical conditions to mimic the effect of a joint cooking in the industrial digester.

Two cost-effective packing materials were used for butyl acetate removal in lab-scale biofilters, namely waste spruce root wood chips and biochar obtained as a byproduct from a wood gasifier. Three biofilters packed with spruce root wood chips: without biochar (SRWC), a similar one with 10% of biochar (SRWC-B) and that with 10% of biochar impregnated with a nitrogen fertilizer (SRWC-IB) showed similar yet differing maximum elimination capacities of 206 ± 27, 275 ± 21 and 294 ± 20 g m h, respectively, enabling high pollutant removal efficiency (>95% at moderate loads) and stable performance. The original biochar adsorption capacity was high (208 ± 6 mg g), but near 70% of it was lost after a 300-day biofilter operation.

This paper focuses on the changes in chemical structure and fiber morphological properties of spruce wood during 15 months of its storage in an open forest woodshed. From the chemical composition, the extractives, cellulose, holocellulose, and lignin content were determined. The pH value was measured on the wood surface using a contact electrode.

The influence of oxygen (0-50 bar) on the molar mass and composition of hemicelluloses after hydrothermal treatment of spruce chips was studied in a batch reactor setup at 130 °C-160 °C. Purified galactoglucomannan was studied as a reference. The dissolved oxygen enhanced significantly the depolymerization of hemicelluloses from over 15,000 g/mol to 180 g/mol (monomers) as well as promoted acids formation from the monosaccharides.
