: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of low vision and legal blindness in adults in developed countries. Wet AMD can be successfully treated using vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) inhibitors; however, dry AMD currently has no effective treatment. The purpose of this study is to analyze the efficacy of intraocular injection of plasma rich in growth factors (PRGF) in an AMD mouse model induced by intraperitoneal administration of sodium iodate. : Intravitreal application of PRGF (experimental group) and saline (control group) was performed immediately after intraperitoneal injection of sodium iodate. Retinographies were performed at 2 and 7 days after treatment administration. The eyes were retrieved for histological and immunohistological analysis. Statistical analysis was performed to compare the outcomes between the study groups. : In comparison to saline solution, PRGF significantly decreased the depigmentation of the RPE, showing a more reddened retina. PRGF intravitreal treatment significantly reduced the glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) stained processes, suggesting a significant reduction in the risk of scar formation. Moreover, the myofibroblast invasion into the RPE cell layer was significantly reduced in the PRGF-treated group of mice. There was a tendency for better preservation of the photoreceptors in the PRGF group. : Within the limitations of this study, intravitreal injection of PRGF provided significant protection against the degeneration of the photoreceptors and the RPE induced by the systemic administration of NaIO.

Background: Injectable platelet-rich fibrin (i-PRF) has the capacity to release great amounts of several growth factors, as well as to stimulate increased fibroblast migration and the expression of collagen, transforming growth factor β, and platelet-derived growth factor. Consequently, i-PRF can be used as a bioactive agent to promote periodontal tissue regeneration.

Objective: We aim to compare and evaluate the effectiveness of i-PRF in periodontal tissue regeneration.

Using platelet concentrates to treat maxillofacial tissue lesions.

Front Bioeng Biotechnol

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Oral Diseases, Sichuan University, Chengdu, China.

Objectives: Platelet concentrates (PCs), which are blood products that are abundant in platelets and growth factors, have become pivotal in treating maxillofacial tissue lesions due to their capacity for promoting bone and soft tissue recovery. This review will provide some recent progress of the use of platelet concentrates to treat lesions on maxillofacial tissues.

Subjects: We reviewed the mechanisms by which PCs promote wound healing and tissue recovery and summarized the application of PCs in the treatment of lesions on maxillofacial tissues, including medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw, post-extraction wound healing, implant surgery, temporomandibular joint diseases, and periodontal tissue restoration.

Vitamin K-dependent gamma-carboxyglutamic acid protein 1 promotes pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma progression through stabilizing oncoprotein KRAS and tyrosine kinase receptor EGFR.

Clin Transl Med

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Systems Medicine for Cancer, Shanghai Cancer Institute, Ren Ji Hospital, School of Medicine, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai, P.R. China.

Background: Vitamin K-dependent γ-glutamic acid carboxylation (Gla) proteins are calcium-binding and membrane-associated, participating in coagulation, bone turnover, and cancer biology. The molecular function of transmembrane proline-rich Gla proteins (PRRGs) remains unexplored.

Methods: Analysis of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) datasets, including transcription profiles, clinical data, and tissue microarrays, was conducted to evaluate PRRG1 expression and its clinical relevance.

Department of Clinical Biochemistry, Copenhagen University Hospital - Rigshospitalet, Centre of Diagnostic Investigation, Copenhagen, Denmark; Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, Department of Clinical Medicine, University of Copenhagen, Denmark. Electronic address:

Objective: Beyond glucose-lowering, sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors have cardioprotective effects with unclear mechanisms. We examined changes in an extensive panel of plasma lipids, lipoproteins, and apolipoproteins and whether these changes were independent of weight loss, hemoglobin A1c, and hematocrit in patients treated with empagliflozin versus placebo to better understand the observed cardioprotective effects.

Methods: Post-hoc analyses of two double-blind, placebo-controlled trials, the Empire HF trial including 190 patients with heart failure and reduced ejection fraction and the SIMPLE trial including 90 patients with type 2 diabetes randomized to, respectively, 10 mg and 25 mg empagliflozin daily or placebo for 12 weeks.
