In two recent papers (Curr Trends Neurol 17: 83-98, 2023; J Neurophysiol 124: 1029-1044, 2020), James Lee has argued that his Transmembrane Electrostatically-Localized Cations (TELC) hypothesis offers a model of neuron transmembrane potentials that is superior to Hodgkin-Huxley classic cable theory and the Goldman-Hodgkin-Katz (GHK) equation. Here we examine critically the arguments in these papers, finding key weaknesses and fallacies. We also examine closely the literature cited by Lee, and find (i) strong support for the GHK equation; (ii) published measurements that contradict TELC predictions; and (iii) no convincing support for the TELC hypothesis.

Current models of respiratory CO chemosensitivity are centred around the function of a specific population of neurons residing in the medullary retrotrapezoid nucleus (RTN). However, there is significant evidence suggesting that chemosensitive neurons exist in other brainstem areas, including the rhythm-generating region of the medulla oblongata - the preBötzinger complex (preBötC). There is also evidence that astrocytes, non-neuronal brain cells, contribute to central CO chemosensitivity.

Unlabelled: Given the causative parasite hypothesis for tropical endemic limbo-conjunctivitis (TELC), we conducted an analytical case-control study of all children with tropical endemic limbo-conjunctivitis seen in the ophthalmology department of Laquintinie hospital in Douala during the period from January 2nd to April 30, 2015.
Results: We identified 64 cases of tropical endemic limbo-conjunctivitis out of 550 children seen; a hospital prevalence of 11.6%; thirteen cases (eight boys and five girls) did not meet inclusion criteria, and 51 cases were included, 31 boys (60.
