Interleukin (IL)-18 is one of the members of IL-1 family cytokines, it was originally named as interferon gamma (IFN-γ) inducing factor. IL-18 is a pleiotropic immune regulator and has a bidirectional regulatory effect on immunity. It exerts a potent pro-inflammatory effect by inducing the expression of IFN-γ, also has an important anti-inflammatory role. In recent years, IL-18 has received widespread attention and become a research hotspot. Previous studies have described the roles of IL-18 in the pathogenesis of many diseases. However, the biologic activities of IL-18 and its role in the reproductive endocrine and reproductive immune related diseases are still not well understood, such as endometriosis (EMS), recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA), polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and infertility, which are closely related to inflammation and immunity. Here, we reviewed the research progress of IL-18 in these diseases in the past few years. This article provides an overview of the latest knowledge about the roles of IL-18 in these diseases, with a view to providing new possibilities for the diagnosis and treatment of reproductive endocrine and reproductive immune related disorders.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most prevalent endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age worldwide, and its related features like obesity, mental health issues and hyperandrogenism may contribute to inadequately investigated health problems such as sexual dysfunction (SD) and lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). Therefore, this study examined the impact of PCOS on sexual function (SF) and lower urinary tract in Syrian women by recruiting a total of 178 women of reproductive age, of whom 88 were diagnosed with PCOS according to the Rotterdam criteria and 90 without PCOS were considered as the control group. Female sexual function index (FSFI) and Bristol Female Lower Urinary Tract Symptom Questionnaire (BFLUTS) were used to assess SF and LUTS respectively.

Steroid hormone-induced wingless ligands tune female intestinal size in Drosophila.

Nat Commun

Department of Biology, Institute of Genetics, The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, Düsseldorf, Germany.

Female reproduction comes at great expense to energy metabolism compensated by extensive organ adaptations including intestinal size. Upon mating, endocrine signals orchestrate a 30% net increase of absorptive epithelium. Mating increases production of the steroid hormone Ecdysone released by the Drosophila ovaries that stimulates intestinal stem cell (ISC) divisions.

Pathophysiological effects of hypoxia on testis function and spermatogenesis.

Nat Rev Urol

January 2025

Discipline of Biological Sciences, College of Engineering, Science and Environment, The University of Newcastle, Callaghan, New South Wales, Australia.

Multiple conditions can cause hypoxia in the testis, including exposure to high altitude, sleep apnoea, testicular torsion and varicocele. Varicocele accounts for up to 44% of instances of primary infertility, but the cumulative contribution of hypoxic conditions to male infertility is undefined. Results of controlled hypobaric hypoxia studies have demonstrated a substantial detrimental effect of short-term and long-term exposures on sperm; however, downstream effects on embryo development and offspring health are less well understood.

Gestational Weight Gain (GWG) modulates pregnancy outcomes and long-term offspring metabolic health. The 2009 Institute of Medicine (IOM) GWG recommendations have largely been validated in Caucasian and mono-ethnic East Asian cohorts. Asians are at higher metabolic risk at a lower body mass index (BMI), and this has prompted the World Health Organization (WHO) to identify lower BMI cut-offs for risk evaluation amongst Asians.

[Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and Mental Health in Adolescents].

October 2024

Facultad de Medicina Occidente, Universidad de Chile, Santiago, Chile.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine-metabolic disorder in female adolescents, and it is associated with metabolic, cardiovascular, and reproductive complications. Recent findings also suggest an association with psychiatric pathology, both affected patients and their offspring. In this update, we synthesized the recent literature on mental health in women and adolescents with PCOS through a systematic search in PubMed, Epistemonikos, and Scielo for articles published in the last 5 years.
