The present study aimed to investigate the hydrogeochemical patterns and contamination of the radiogeology, especially radon activity, related to geothermal aquifer properties and to perform a risk assessment of annual effective doses covering all hydrothermal spring attractions in Southern Thailand. Radon is an established lung carcinogen; especially longer term exposure to radioactive radon through inhalation could be a cause of lung cancer risk. Altogether 22 hydrothermal spring samples were collected from the six hydrothermal provinces in Southern Thailand in early November of 2023. Geochemical data represented by calcium chloride and sodium chloride type, most of which were influenced by seawater intrusion. In addition, the hydrothermal springs that located along local fault zones were mainly controlled by water‒rock interactions, indicating that hydrothermal spring quality was influenced by weathering. Hydrothermal springs located along the coastlines of the Gulf of Thailand and Andaman Sea were dominated by evaporation. Radon activity concentrations show value levels from 9 Bq/L (PG1) to 7,070 Bq/L (SR3), with an average of 580 Bq/L. Radon levels of hydrothermal spring attractions can be divided into three categories: (a) low radon levels below 100 Bq/L, (b) moderate to high radon levels between 100 and 580 Bq/L, and (c) very high radon levels greater than 580 Bq/L. The total annual effective doses for adults due to ingestion and dominantly inhalation of radon at hydrothermal spring attractions varied from 0.01 to 19.30 mSv/year. These results highlight the usefulness of this method as an essential tool for delineating radon concentrations, which could be used to introduce guidelines for health risk assessment.

In this study, the photodegradation of cetirizine dihydrochloride (CET) by BiO/TiO heterojunctions under simulated solar light irradiation (300-800nm) was examined in detail for the first time. A hydrothermal synthesis of the photocatalyst was carried out, and several analytical techniques were used to characterize the product. The resulting BiO/TiO photocatalyst effectively removed CET from an aqueous solution.

Background: Tramway Ridge, a geothermal Antarctic Specially Protected Area (elevation 3340 m) located near the summit of Mount Erebus, is home to a unique community composed of cosmopolitan surface-associated micro-organisms and abundant, poorly understood subsurface-associated microorganisms. Here, we use shotgun metagenomics to compare the functional capabilities of this community to those found elsewhere on Earth and to infer in situ diversity and metabolic capabilities of abundant subsurface taxa.

Results: We found that the functional potential in this community is most similar to that found in terrestrial hydrothermal environments (hot springs, sediments) and that the two dominant organisms in the subsurface carry high rates of in situ diversity which was taken as evidence of potential endemicity.

It is well known that biochar remarkably changes the fertility and quality in degraded soils, however, it's still not clear how homogeneous application (HA) and bottom concentrated application of biochar (CA) influences soil moisture (SM), soil temperature (ST) and salts during crops seedling stage. In this study, both HA and CA combining with four levels of 0 (CK), 10 (CA1/HA1), 20 (CA2/HA2) and 40 t ha (CA3/HA3) were used to reveal how biochar affects SM, ST and soil electrical conductivity (EC) at seedling stage (spring) of maize in moderately degraded Mollisols. The results showed that, the speed of daily ST increase was only significantly slower in CA1 than in CK during the warming stage, performing a "hysteresis effect".

The study analyzed the effectiveness of a two-week cycle of sulfurous water therapy at Frasassi Thermal Springs ("Terme di Frasassi - S. Vittore", located in the Province of Ancona, Italy) on 8 patients suffering from rhinogenic deafness caused by chronic rhinosinusitis associated with nasal polyps and respiratory allergies.
