A series of -tricarbollides based on 10,11-X-7-MeN--7,8,9-CBH (X = H, Cl, Br, I) and their protonated, i.e. cationic, counterparts, which have an extra H-bridge over the B10-B11 vector in the open pentagonal belt, were prepared. Their structures have been verified by the joint (DFT)/GIAO(ZORA)/NMR approach, MS and HR-MS spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction techniques. The iodination process is quite slow and could be monitored by B NMR spectroscopy in conjunction with a computational search for the corresponding reaction pathway. These efforts have revealed the existence of monoiodo tricarbollide cationic motifs with an iodine atom in the positions that have features of an asymmetrical bridge over B10(H)-B11(H) in 10,11-H-7-MeN--7,8,9-CBH or B10(I)-B11(H) in 10,11-I,H-7-MeN--7,8,9-CBH. Interestingly, 1,2-(COOH)--1,2-CBH is one of the active acids, which confirms the earlier observation that a dicarboxylic acid based on -carborane acts as a superacid.

Pt/IrO enables selective electrochemical C-H chlorination at high current.

Nat Commun

January 2025

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, National University of Singapore, Singapore, Republic of Singapore.

Employing electrochemistry for the selective functionalization of liquid alkanes allows for sustainable and efficient production of high-value chemicals. However, the large potentials required for C(sp)-H bond functionalization and low water solubility of such alkanes make it challenging. Here we discover that a Pt/IrO electrocatalyst with optimized Cl binding energy enables selective generation of Cl free radicals for C-H chlorination of alkanes.

Metataxonomics study of dental bioaerosols affected by waterline disinfection.

BMC Oral Health

December 2024

Center of Excellence on Oral Microbiology and Immunology, Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Dentistry, Chulalongkorn University, Henri Dunant Rd, Bangkok, 10330, Thailand.

Background: Microorganisms in dental unit water (DUW) play a significant role in dental bioaerosols. If the methods used to decontaminate DUW also help improve air quality in dental clinics is worth exploring. In this study, we aim to identify the source of bacteria in dental bioaerosols and investigate the impact of waterline disinfectants on the quantity and composition of bacteria in DUW and bioaerosols.
