AI Article Synopsis

  • The study shows that metal-doped clay (MDC) can selectively produce ribose from formaldehyde without biological processes.
  • Ribose remains stable better than other carbohydrates when combined with natural minerals and divalent cations, suggesting its significance on early Earth.
  • This research provides insights into why ribose is considered the foundational component of RNA in living organisms.

Article Abstract

This study demonstrates that metal-doped-clay (MDC) can be a selective platform for ribose produced from formaldehyde under abiotic conditions. Ribose exhibits superior retention compared with other carbohydrates on naturally occurring minerals on the early Earth in the presence of divalent cations. This finding offers an insight into the necessity of the emergence of ribose as the backbone of extant RNA.

This work presents a robust strategy for quantifying overlapping electrochemical signatures originating from complex mixtures and real human plasma samples using nickel-based electrochemical sensors and machine learning (ML). This strategy enables the detection of a panel of analytes without being limited by the selectivity of the transducer material and leaving accommodation of interference analysis to ML models. Here, we fabricated a non-enzymatic electrochemical sensor for L-lactic acid detection in complex mixtures and human plasma samples using nickel oxide (NiO) nanoparticle-modified glassy carbon electrodes (GCE).

Non-enzymatic glycation is the chemical reaction between the amine group of an amino acid and the carbonyl group of a reducing sugar. The final products of this reaction, advanced glycation end-products (AGEs), are known to play a key role in aging and many chronic diseases. The kinetics of the AGE formation reaction depends on several factors, including pH, temperature, and the presence of prooxidant metals, such as iron and copper.

Visible light photocatalysts hold great promise for water purification, yet research on highly efficient, non-toxic photocatalysts is limited. This study synthesized novel g-CN/AlOOH photocatalytic nanocomposites via thermal condensation, enhancing adsorption and visible light degradation by 36-fold and 11-fold, respectively, compared to g-CN alone. The nanocomposites achieved a 98% removal rate of methyl orange under xenon lamp irradiation (>400 nm) for 1 h.

Owing to the adverse consequences of excess glucose (Glu) and hydrogen peroxide (HO) on humans, it is imperative to develop an electrochemical sensor for detection of these analytes with good selectivity and sensitivity. Herein, a nanohybrid comprising nickel cobaltite nanoparticles (NiCoO NPs) embedded on conductive TiCT nanosheets (NSs) has been prudently designed and employed for the electrochemical detection of Glu and HO. The developed nanohybrid has been systematically characterized using morphological and spectral techniques, and then immobilized on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE).
