Recently, the emergence of two-dimensional (2D) multiferroic materials has opened a new perspective for exploring topological states. However, instances of tuning topological phase transitions through ferroelectric (FE) polarization in 2D ferromagnetic (FM) materials are relatively rare. Here, we found that 11 single layer (SL) materials, named the MMGeX family, possess both FE and FM properties. Among them, 5 SL materials exhibit controllable topological phase transition ferroelectric-paraelectric switching. Taking the SL ReIrGeS as an example, we find that the paraelectric (PE) and FE phases exhibit half-metal and magnetic semiconductor behavior, respectively. In the spin-down channel of the PE phase, a critical-type Weyl point (WP) is observed with a robust Fermi arc edge state. In contrast, the FE phase of the SL ReIrGeS clearly identifies 0D corner states in both spin channels. Therefore, under the control of external fields, the SL ReIrGeS undergoes a transformation from PE to FE by overcoming the energy barrier of 0.62 eV, subsequently realizing the phase transition from the Weyl semimetal to the high order topological insulator. These findings not only combine topological states with multiferroics but also pave the way for the experimental discovery of 2D tunable topological phase transition.

Massive Dirac fermions, which are essential for realizing novel topological phenomena, are expected to be generated from massless Dirac fermions by breaking the related symmetry, such as time-reversal symmetry in topological insulators or crystal symmetry in topological crystalline insulators. Here, we report scanning tunneling microscopy and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy studies of α-Bi_{4}I_{4}, which reveals the realization of massive Dirac fermions in the (100) surface states without breaking the time-reversal symmetry. Combined with first-principles calculations, our experimental results indicate that the spontaneous symmetry breaking engenders two nondegenerate edge states at the opposite sides of monolayer Bi_{4}I_{4} after the structural phase transition, imparting mass to the Dirac fermions after taking the interlayer coupling into account.

Probing Berry Phase Effect in Topological Surface States.

Phys Rev Lett

We have observed the Berry phase effect associated with interband coherence in topological surface states (TSSs) using two-color high-harmonic spectroscopy. This Berry phase accumulates along the evolution path of strong field-driven electron-hole quasiparticles in electronic bands with strong spin-orbit coupling. By introducing a secondary weak field, we perturb the evolution of Dirac fermions in TSSs and thus provide access to the Berry phase.

Recent studies have attracted widespread attention on magnet-superconductor hybrid systems with emergent topological superconductivity. Here, we present the Floquet engineering of realistic two-dimensional topological nodal-point superconductors that are composed of antiferromagnetic monolayers in proximity to an s-wave superconductor. We show that Floquet chiral topological superconductivity arises due to light-induced breaking of the effective time-reversal symmetry.

Mapping the Topological Proximity-Induced Gap in Multiterminal Josephson Junctions.

Phys Rev Lett

Department of Physics and Astronomy, Northwestern University, 2145 Sheridan Road, Evanston, Illinois 60208, USA.

Multiterminal Josephson junctions (MTJJs), devices in which a normal metal is in contact with three or more superconducting leads, have been proposed as artificial analogs of topological crystals. The topological nature of MTJJs manifests as a modulation of the quasiparticle density of states (DOS) in the normal metal that may be probed by tunneling measurements. We show that one can reveal this modulation by measuring the resistance of diffusive MTJJs with normal contacts, which shows rich structure as a function of the phase differences {ϕ_{i}}.
