Background: Obtaining a full understanding of the anatomical structure of the eyeball and the contents within the eye plays a crucial role in learning eye diseases. However, it can be challenging for beginners to quickly learn, memorize, and apply this anatomical knowledge. To improve the teaching of ocular anatomy and help students overcome learning difficulties in ophthalmology clerkship, Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center developed an integrated ocular anatomy course comprising three main components: 'online preview,' 'lecture,' and 'wetlab dissection'.

Methods: Fifty-five fourth-year medical students from Sun Yat-sen University were recruited for this study. The impact of the integrated course was evaluated through three in-class quizzes (T1: pre-teaching assessment, T2: post-wetlab training, and T3: end of clerkship) and assessments of students' self-confidence levels. Additionally, students' course evaluations were gathered via a questionnaire survey. Statistical analyses were conducted via ANOVA and the Kruskal-Wallis test.

Results: The integration course significantly improved the mean scores of post-teaching tests (67.08 ± 10.27 vs. 74.36 ± 12.75 vs. 78.81 ± 12.70, P < 0.0001) and the students' self-confidence scores (P < 0.0001). Fifty-four participants were satisfied with the integrated anatomy course (79.3% strongly agreed, 18.2% more agreed). Fifty-two participants agreed (76.4% strongly agreed, 18.2% more agreed) that the course could help them better understand the anatomy of the eye.

Conclusions: This integrated ocular anatomy course can aid students in better understanding and retaining the anatomy and function of ocular structures, serving as a valuable adjunct teaching strategy that can be further applied to ophthalmology clerkship.

Background: An imbalance between the production and clearance of amyloid beta (Aß) has emerged as a major cause of sporadic Alzheimer's disease (AD). Retinal wholemount studies can identify cell-specific involvement in Aß clearance mechanisms which cannot be accomplished in the brain ex vivo.

Methods: Eye cross-sections of double transgenic (Tg, APP-PS1) and non-carrier sibling female mice (n = 16, 4 per group) at 3- and 9- month ages were probed with antibodies 6E10 (Aβ1-16 amino-acid residues, soluble and insoluble species), ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1 (IBA1, microglia/macrophage), glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP, astrocytes), glutamine synthetase (GS, Müller cells) and aquaporin-4 (AQP4, membrane water channel) using immunofluorescence.

Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

CellSight Ocular Stem Cell and Regeneration Program, Sue Anschutz-Rodgers Eye Center, University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, Aurora, CO, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • Down Syndrome (DS) is linked with a higher risk of developing Alzheimer's disease (AD), yet the effects of AD on the retina in DS individuals remain unexplored.
  • The study analyzed cadaver retinas from DS donors and developed retinal organoid models using induced pluripotent stem cells, aiming to identify AD-related pathology.
  • Findings showed increased amyloid-β plaques and phosphorylated Tau in DS retinas and organoids compared to controls, mirroring brain pathology, which could enhance AD diagnosis and treatment strategies in DS patients.

Background: Due to its location, the ocular surface is exposed to environmental microbes. Innate immune cells including macrophages are first line defense against infections. exposure to high glucose as well as diabetes-associated hyperglycemia has been shown to affect innate immune cell function and population.

Systemic administration of Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors is effective in treating chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD) but is associated with side effects. Topical drug administration effectively minimizes side effects. We aimed to investigate potential trends of the efficacy of topical delgocitinib administration in a mouse model.
