Background: Wide QRS complex tachycardia (WCT) differentiation into ventricular tachycardia (VT) and supraventricular wide complex tachycardia (SWCT) remains challenging despite numerous 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) criteria and algorithms. Automated solutions leveraging computerized ECG interpretation (CEI) measurements and engineered features offer practical ways to improve diagnostic accuracy. We propose automated algorithms based on (i) WCT QRS polarity direction (WCT Polarity Code [WCT-PC]) and (ii) QRS polarity shifts between WCT and baseline ECGs (QRS Polarity Shift [QRS-PS]).

Immunological characterization of pleural effusions in pediatric patients.

Front Immunol

December 2024

Department of General Pediatrics and Neonatology, Saarland University, Campus Homburg, Homburg, Germany.

Background: The pleural cavity represents a unique immunological compartment that can mount inflammatory reactions during infections, after surgery and in chronic immunological diseases. The connection between systemic immune reactions in the blood and local immune reactions in pleural effusions remains unclear. This study provides the first comprehensive immunological characterization of paired blood and pleural effusion samples, utilizing combined cell and cytokine analyses in pediatric patients undergoing cardiac surgery.

Introduction: COVID-19 has increased parental stress and significantly impacted the psychological well-being of individuals, especially parents of school-age children. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy posits that individuals can accept their unchangeable inner experiences (thoughts and feelings) while acting in ways aligned with their personal values, demonstrating effectiveness in reducing stress and improving psychological well-being, especially among parents of children with chronic illness. This study aimed to test the effectiveness of a group-based ACT, delivered flexibly, in improving stress and psychological well-being in parents with school-age children, regardless of their children's chronic conditions, within a real-world context.

Article Synopsis
  • Low back pain is mainly caused by degeneration of the intervertebral disc, prompting research into microRNA (miRNA) therapies which can modulate discogenic factors and inhibit degeneration.
  • Nonviral cell penetrating peptides (CPPs) are favored for delivering these miRNAs due to their targeted delivery and low immune response.
  • Results showed that dual miRNA delivery significantly enhanced discogenic marker expression and created a regenerative environment, indicating potential benefits for improved treatments for IVD repair.
