The demand for sustainable plant-based protein is rising due to concerns over the environmental impact of animal-based protein. One promising yet overlooked protein source is the seed cake generated from Camellia oleifera oil extraction (COSC), which contains 14-20 % crude protein. COSC protein (COSCP) exhibit excellent nutritional and functional properties making it a promising ingredient for innovative food products. However, its adoption remains limited. This review discusses COSCP extraction methods, functional properties, and food applications to promote its broader utilization. It also examined how oil extraction methods influence COSCP functional characteristics and explores modification techniques to enhance its functionality. COSCP has excellent functional properties, making it suitable for use as emulsifier, foaming, and gelling agents in food systems. However, cross-linking of COSCP with saponins and phenolics during seed processing compromise the protein yield, purity, and functionality and need to be addressed to fully unlock the potential of COSCP in food applications.

Quinoline: A Novel Solution for Next-Generation Pesticides, Herbicides, and Fertilizers.

Appl Biochem Biotechnol

January 2025

Integrative Science Center of Germplasm Creation in Western China (CHONGQING) Science City and Southwest University, College of Agronomy and Biotechnology, Southwest University, Chongqing, 400715, People's Republic of China.

Quinoline is a nitrogen-containing heterocycle compound widely used in the medical industry for its pharmacological properties, such as its antimalarial, antimicrobial, antiparasitic, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer activities. Beyond its medical significance, quinoline shows promising applications in agriculture as a safe and effective pesticide, herbicide, and fertilizer. This review explores the evolution of quinoline research, beginning with its history and synthesis and transitioning to its biological activities and their relevance in agriculture.

Taking the natural product cerbinal as the lead compound, 30 novel 5-aryl-cyclopenta[]pyridine derivatives were designed and synthesized based on the previous bioactivity studies of the cyclopenta[]pyridines. The modification of the position-5 of compound was achieved by amination, bromination, and cross coupling using cerbinal as the raw material. The results of the bioactivity tests demonstrated that partial compounds exhibited superior activity against plant viruses compared to compound .

Integration of DNA-Decorated Hapten in Emergency Immunoassays for Antibody and Small-Molecule Detection: A Review.

J Agric Food Chem

January 2025

National Key Laboratory of Veterinary Public Health Security, College of Veterinary Medicine, Beijing Key Laboratory of Detection Technology for Animal-Derived Food Safety, and Beijing Laboratory for Food Quality and Safety, China Agricultural University, Beijing 100193, People's Republic of China.

DNA-decorated hapten (DDH)-based immunoassays have emerged, demonstrating supreme advantages in sensing applications because of their excellent sensitivity, specificity, and reliability. DDH combines both a recognition element (hapten) and a signal transduction element (DNA portion) with its highly programmable DNA structure enabling the trigger of signal transduction following a recognition event, thereby introducing a novel signal transduction mechanism to immunoassays. In this review, we provide a critical overview of recent research in the DDH-based immunoassays, which are designed to detect specific small molecules and antibodies.

Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, St. John's University, 8000 Utopia Parkway, Queens, New York 11439, United States.

Although glycine is the simplest of the amino acids, its solution and solid-state properties are far from straightforward. The aqueous solubility of glycine plays an important role in various applications, including nutrition, food products, biodegradable plastics, and drug development. There is evidence that glycine in subsaturated pH 3-8 solutions forms a dimer, as suggested by several techniques.
