Advances in neonatal medicine over the last several decades have led to improvements in survival for the most fragile and critically ill infants. A mainstay of supporting the health needs of hospitalized infants involves use of peripheral intravenous (PIV) catheters to administer medications, parenteral nutrition, and blood products. However, PIV catheters are not without risks and complications such as infiltration and extravasation. While prevention of these complications remains a persistent challenge, a variety of treatment options may be used to reduce or avoid permanent harm. This review summarizes the range of strategies aimed at reducing PIV catheter-associated injuries and their complications.

Neonatal peripheral intravenous catheters (PIVCs) can be difficult to insert, often requiring multiple attempts, with each attempt causing pain and delaying treatment. The aim of this study was describe the clinical characteristics of neonates requiring multiple PIVCs during hospitalization. Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) is an acquired, autoimmune peripheral neuropathy, rarely reported as being associated with systemic lupus erythematous (SLE). We report the case of 53-year-old women with a long history of SLE, diagnosed with CIDP during a lupus flare beginning with progressive muscle weakness of lower and upper limbs, without affection of the central nervous system. She received treatment with steroids, intravenous immunoglobulins and anifrolumab and showed clinical and immunological improvement.
