U-Type-Shaped Curves Across Economics, Biology, and Infection.

Surg Infect (Larchmt)

January 2025

Division of Biological Sciences, University of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois, USA.

Major threats to the economic future of several nations include climate change, infectious pandemics, and drug-resistant bacteria. The rise and fall of each of these behaviors seems to conform to a U-shaped or inverted U-shaped curve. In academic medicine, stakeholders in the field (infection control personnel, epidemiologists, and vaccinologists) will argue that infectious outbreaks can be prevented by surveillance programs and the development of new drugs (antibiotics, vaccines, etc.

Confounding is a significant challenge in endodontic research, as it can blur the true effect and relationship between exposure and outcomes, potentially compromising the internal validity of research findings. Confounding variables can create apparent differences between study groups when no actual difference exists or fail to reveal true differences when they are present. Additionally, confounding can lead to either an underestimation or an overestimation of the effect of exposure on the outcome.

The role of miR-155 in cardiovascular diseases: Potential diagnostic and therapeutic targets.

Int J Cardiol Cardiovasc Risk Prev

March 2025

Department of Vascular Surgery, The Affiliated Hospital, Southwest Medical University, Luzhou, 646000, China.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), such as atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases, heart failure (HF), and acute coronary syndrome, represent a significant threat to global health and impose considerable socioeconomic burdens. The intricate pathogenesis of CVD involves various regulatory mechanisms, among which microRNAs (miRNAs) have emerged as critical posttranscriptional regulators. In particular, miR-155 has demonstrated differential expression patterns across a spectrum of CVD and is implicated in the etiology and progression of arterial disorders.

Inflammatory bowel disease, including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, poses an emerging threat as it can lead to colorectal cancer, thrombosis, and other chronic conditions. The present study demonstrated the protective effects of peanut sprout extracts (PSEs) prepared from day 2 to day 7 of germination against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced epithelial barrier breakdown. Although the peanut sprout length increased in a time-dependent manner from day 1 to day 7, the extraction yields remained relatively consistent from day 2 to day 7.
