Fish represent the most common companion exotic animal in the United States and Canada in number of individuals and hold the third place after dogs and cats in terms of the number of households. Beyond companion animals, fish gastrointestinal diseases are particularly relevant for the aquaculture industry as feeding represents about 50% to 70% of the costs associated with fish production. Thus, nutrient malabsorption may have dramatic consequences both for the fish health and body condition score, but also for farmers. In this review, the authors discuss the anatomy, physiology, and pathology of the digestive system of fish.

Introduction: Heavy metal pollution threatens the biodiversity and ecological equilibrium of the Nile River. This study investigates the impact of heavy metal pollution on aquatic animals such as Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in the Damietta branch of the River Nile and El-Rayah El-Tawfeeky canal in Benha City in Egypt.

Methods: Fish and water samples were collected from the Damietta branch and El-Rayah El-Tawfeeky during the fall of 2022.

Dietary quality, anaemia prevalence and their associated factors among rural school- going adolescents in Acholi sub -region of Uganda.

Department of Food Science and Postharvest Technology, Faculty of Agriculture and Environment, Gulu University, P.O. Box 166, Gulu, Uganda.

Background: Globally, iron deficiency anaemia is a widespread public health problem affecting vulnerable populations including adolescents. However, over the years, the Uganda Demographic Health Surveys mostly report the status of anaemia for women of reproductive age (15-49 years) and children up to 5 years, leaving out the focus on adolescents. Moreover, high prevalence of anaemia among children below five years could suggest that anaemia still persists at adolescence.

Identification of the arachidonic acid 5-lipoxygenase and its function in the immunity of Apostichopus japonicus.

Department of Biotechnology, School of Biological Engineering, Dalian Polytechnic University, Dalian 116034, Liaoning Province, P. R. China; Dalian Jinshiwan Laboratory, Dalian, China. Electronic address:

A number of studies have been demonstrated that arachidonate 5-lipoxygenase (ALOX-5) plays a role in regulating a range of physiological and pathological processes through the catalysis of leukotriene formation from arachidonic acid (ARA). The coding sequence of ALOX-5 from Apostichopus japonicus (Aj-ALOX-5) was successfully amplified, resulting in a 2028 bp ORF sequence that encodes 674 amino acids. A comparison of the amino acid sequence with those of other 5-lipoxygenases revealed that Aj-ALOX-5 has the N-terminal "PLAT domain" and C-terminal "lipoxygenase structural domain" characteristic of this enzyme family.

This study investigated the effects of bamboo shoot extract (Bambusa vulgaris) as a feed additive on the health profiles and infection resistance of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) against Pseudomonas putida. Bamboo shoot extract was added at levels of 0 g, 40 g, and 60 g per 1000 g of diet over a 60-day period. The fish were then challenged with a pathogenic P.

N6-methyladenosine (m6A) is the most prevalent RNA modification and a multifaceted regulator capable of affecting various aspects of mRNA metabolism, thereby playing important roles in numerous physiological processes. However, it is still unknown whether, when, and to what extent m6A modulation are implicated in the immune response of an economically important aquaculture fish, half-smooth tongue sole (Cynoglossus semilaevis). Herein, we systematically profiled and characterized the m6A epitranscriptome and transcriptome in C.
