Brain iron deposition and cognitive decline in patients with cerebral small vessel disease : a quantitative susceptibility mapping study.

Alzheimers Res Ther

January 2025

Department of Radiology, Weill Medical College of Cornell University, New York, NY, USA, Meinig School of Biomedical Engineering, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, USA.

Background: Quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) can study the susceptibility values of brain tissue which allows for noninvasive examination of local brain iron levels in both normal and pathological conditions.

Purpose: Our study compares brain iron deposition in gray matter (GM) nuclei between cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) patients and healthy controls (HCs), exploring factors that affect iron deposition and cognitive function.

Materials And Methods: A total of 321 subjects were enrolled in this study.

Context: Riboflavin (RF), also known as B2 vitamin, is the precursor to flavin mononucleotide (FMN) and flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD), two co-enzymes involved in many electron transport processes. Interactions of the isoalloxazine ring, common to all three compounds, are of great interest due to their biological function in flavoproteins and relevance in the transport by the carrier protein leading to development of drug delivery strategies and non-invasive diagnostics techniques. Based on protein crystallographic data, a computational investigation of the interactions in the complexes between lumiflavin, a model compound, and aromatic amino acids, tyrosine and tryptophan, was pursued with the goal of characterizing noncovalent interactions.

Indirect Fortification of Traditional Nixtamalized Tortillas with Nixtamalized Corn Flours.

Foods

December 2024

Departamento de Nanotecnología, Centro de Física Aplicada y Tecnología Avanzada, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Campus Juriquilla, Santiago de Querétaro C.P. 76230, Querétaro, Mexico.

Background: This work focused on the study of the indirect fortification of Mexican tortillas made from nixtamalized masa (NM) with nixtamalized commercial corn flour (NCC-F) fortified with Zn, Fe, vitamins and folic acid.

Methods: The chemical proximate values (CPV), ash content, mineral composition by inductively coupled plasma, in vitro protein digestibility (PD), protein digestibility-corrected amino acid score (PDCAAS), the total starch content, the resistant starch (RS) content in nixtamalized corn tortillas (NC-T) and nixtamalized commercial corn flour tortillas (NCCF-T) and the contribution of tortillas prepared with a mixture of NM and NCC-F (75:25 and 50:50, NM:NCC-F) to the recommended dietary intake (RDI) of minerals and vitamins were determined.

Results: No significant differences ( < 0.

Wernicke's encephalopathy, Central Pontine Myelinolysis and Supraventricular Tachycardia in a Case of Hyperemesis Gravidarum.

Mymensingh Med J

January 2025

Dr Muhammad Rezeul Huq, Classified Specialist, Department of Neurology, Combined Military Hospital, Dhaka, Bangladesh; E-mail:

Wernicke's encephalopathy is a potentially lethal complication of thiamine deficiency which mainly occurs in chronic alcoholic patients. It may occur in other conditions like hyperemesis gravidarum too. Pregnancy may also be complicated with other neurological and cardiac complications.
